I pity all the athletes who lost precious months from they professional careers, which are rather limited by age anyway. | | | | | Excellent point! Not easy for many. I am not particularly religious, but we have a contingent in my family who attend daily Catholic mass (the other siblings call them "The God Squad") and they are beside themselves that they cannot practice their faith. Tough times in the US and I am not optimistic about how things go there given the current state of affairs...

| | Re: Will Trump be a Good President? | Quote: | | | | President Trump said Wednesday that he plans to hold his first campaign rally in over three months in Tulsa, Okla., next Friday.
Trump also said he planned to resume rallies in Texas, Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina. | | | | | Source
All of these are States now seeing rising numbers of new coronavirus cases, so it will be interesting to see if these rallies will contribute to the sickness increase or not.
North Carolina pushed back against Trump's plans for the Republican Convention in August demanding reduced numbers, social distancing, etc. Wonder how NC will react to a proposal to have a Trump rally with 20,000 or more people.

My mom could finally attend a mass back home, but it was outside, in front of the church, and folks wore masks and they kept some distance between chairs... She was quite content to be able to do that after all these months. Mind, it's not only about religion but also community - you talk with the priest and then Ms. X and Ms. Z etc etc after the mass... I wouldn't laugh at them. | The following 3 users would like to thank greenmount for this useful post: | |

From CNN: (but you can find it on other news sources too)
The resumption of rallies also comes in the midst of a growing conversation in the United States around the issue of race. Next week's gathering is scheduled for June 19, or Juneteenth -- the day that marks the end of slavery in the United States -- in Tulsa, a city with a checkered racial history. In 1921 hundreds of African Americans were killed during racial unrest in the historic section of Tulsa known as "Black Wall Street."

Seems the Trump campaign do not like negative opinion polls. | Quote: | | | | President Donald Trump's campaign is demanding CNN retract and apologize for a recent poll that showed him well behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
The demand, coming in the form of a cease and desist letter to CNN President Jeff Zucker that contained numerous incorrect and misleading claims, was immediately rejected by the network. | | | | | https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/10/p...oll/index.html |

Presumably, Trump thinks his voters are virus immune, hopes his majority will not pass away (deliberate pun).

Spanky took to Twitter to criticize “Radical Left” Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan (D) after a group of protesters took over City Hall and declared it a police-free autonomous zone. | Quote: | | | | Donald J. Trump@realDonaldTrump
Radical Left Governor@JayInslee and the Mayor of Seattle are being taunted and played at a level that our great Country has never seen before.
Take back your city NOW.

These ugly Anarchists must be (stat) stooped IMMEDIATELY.

Must admit the Mayor of Seattle tweeted an excellent reply. | Quote: | | | | Make us all safe.

Incidentally, the demonstrators only briefly took over City Hall.

Tough times in the US and I am not optimistic about how things go there given the current state of affairs... | | | | | Like so many churches these days, my mother's parish simply got creative. The priest broadcast daily mass and devotional discussions online during the shutdown. Confession could be scheduled by phone or video. Many of the usual parish activities were moved online.
This parish is lucky to have a creative priest and lay volunteers with the patience to help parishoners like my elderly mother who are tech-uneasy to join in.
Volunteer eucharistric ministers delivered communion to any parishioner requesting it. Outreach programs simply stuck to social distancing guidelines and functioned just fine.
My mother says that the sliver lining in all this is that she actually feels even more connected to the parish than before. She certainly does not feel that the lockdown rules in Illinois restricted her right to practice her religion.
The only thing missing during lockdown seemed to be the collection plate. Which my cynical side suspects might be behind some of the mutterings of constitutional challenges.

My last aunt on my mother’s side is 96 and in a nursing home. Luckily, still going, no corona. She went to mass every day until she stopped driving a few years ago. She lives in butt -end western PA, but somehow, someone was broadcasting daily mass and she watched that for a few years and received weekly communion via Eucharistic ministers.
It really helped her.

But still the few posts along those lines have nothing to do with Trump. I was hoping to gently nudge the thread back on topic.

This thread has wandered all over the place, but religion and people wanting to practice it in the USA is relevant - because Trump has a huge evangelical base he plays to.
With the lockdown rules, different churches took/are taking different approaches. Some never wanted to close, some easily switched to online. My mom's church even delivered Palm Sunday fronds and delivers communion so everyone can take it at the same time, while safely at home.
Plenty of Trump supporters protested not being able to go to church under lockdown orders, and Trump said churches should be open. He did a photo op in front of a church after clearing peaceful protesters with tear gas.

Dow Jones index fell over 1,800 points today, the fourth largest points fall in US history - all of them under Trump's watch.
Where next? On the one hand, a group believes the Fed will print enough money to keep US stocks high, on the other hand, the US is in recession and all the major economic indicators are in the cellar.
Meanwhile, almost Friday - despite Trump tweeting the US would leave the World Health Organisation (WHO) nobody in his administration has actually implemented any necessary changes. Pulling the United States out of the organization, as required by the law approving U.S. membership in it, requires a year’s formal notice and payment of outstanding dues to the organization.
GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, a staunch backer of President Donald Trump, expressed support for Gen. Mark Milley after the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff apologized for appearing in a video with the President at St. John's Church that followed peaceful protesters being forcefully cleared from a park near the White House.

LOL!
Melania Trump delayed coming to the White House after her husband Donald Trump won the 2016 election because she was renegotiating her prenuptial agreement, a new book has claimed
