Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

In a press release on Friday Pelosi says she's discussed taking nuclear codes away from [unstable] Trump with Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman.

Meanwhile, Trump auction of oil leases in Arctic refuge attracts barely any bidders. The lease sales will not cover Republicans’ proposed tax cuts as promised.

Every major bank in the U.S. has ruled out financing oil and gas exploration in the Arctic.

“This lease sale was an epic failure for the Trump administration and the Alaska congressional delegation,” Adam Kolton, executive director of the Alaska Wilderness League, told The Guardian.
“After years of promising a revenue and jobs bonanza they ended up throwing a party for themselves, with the state being one of the only bidders.”

The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA- is a public corporation of the State of Alaska) won nearly every bid in a sale that raised just $14.4 million dollars, roughly $27 per acre, reported The Hill.

“To my knowledge this has never happened before, that a state bids on federal leases within their own state,” Jenny Rowland-Shea, a senior public lands policy analyst at the Center for American Progress told The Hill.
“It’s very odd because the state of Alaska will get 50 percent of the revenue from lease sales. Basically, they will be paying to not make any money on those lease sales.”

The Tax Cut/Reform Bill, including Massive Alaska Drilling brought it all together as to what an incredible year we had.
$14.4 million dollars = Massive Alaska Drilling

The state of Alaska gets 50 percent of the revenue so the actual net benefit of the sale is $7.2 million.

I said to my husband earlier that the riots in the Capitol somehow seem like the perfect cumulative end to Trump's presidency, considering the shit show it's already been for the past four years.

Too little, too late
At the rate at which Trump's cabinet secretaries are resigning (Betsy "super-qualified for the education job" DeVos has also resigned), there'll be nobody left to invoke the 25th!

@TwitterSafety

After close review of recent Tweets from the
@realDonaldTrump
account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action.

Excellent! Finally, some backbone... although can't help thinking it's only once the writing is very clearly on the wall for Trump that these brave decisions are being made.

What about it? Trump is still free to talk utter nonsense. He just won’t be able to use an amplifier like Twitter after repeated violations of their policy on inciting violence.

The "freedom of speech" doesn't mean that there aren't consequences to that freedom. This is also why Jihadist groups that use social media to recruit new members are removed from Facebook, etc.

Murkowski becomes first GOP senator to call on Trump to resign

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/08/p...ump/index.html

"Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski is calling on President Donald Trump to resign following the riots at the Capitol on Wednesday, making her the first Republican senator to take that step.
"I want him to resign. I want him out. He has caused enough damage," Murkowski said in an interview with the Anchorage Daily News.
"I think he should leave. He said he's not going to show up. He's not going to appear at the at the inauguration. He hasn't been focused on what is going on with COVID. He's either been golfing or he's been inside the Oval Office fuming and throwing every single person who has been loyal and faithful to him under the bus, starting with the vice president," Murkowski told the paper."

I understand the OP's point however, it's all about where you draw the line. Today it's fairly obvious but tomorrow? Will we silence or ban those opinions we deem incendiary because they differ rather than actually incite any sort of violence or instability? I think it's a fair question to consider going forward

I am obviously no advocate of Trump or fascists but we may look back in a few years at this as a milestone and realize how debate began to be silenced/controlled in the digital age

Freedom of speech does not permit one to promote violence, civil unrest and similar; read up on US Supreme Court opinions on this.

Too many people quote " Freedom of speech" without any idea of what it really means.

All power to Twitter before more lives are lost.

Twitter is a US company so long as they follow the US supreme court approach then there should be no problem.
If they do not then banned people can pursue legal remedies, with what degree of success I do not know.

BTW, soon to be ex-Senate leader McConnell yesterday circulated the procedure for fast impeachment

The majority of people have "freedom of speech" on social media. But once they incite violence, they are removed (or should be). They still have that "freedom of speech" -- just not the ability to use that social media site(s) to employ it.

So yeah, there is a line, and some people cross it. There are a lot of people out there who seem to live under the delusional notion that they are somehow immune to the consequences of their actions.

Is there any truth in the rumour that Trump is at the moment in Airforce one flying to some unknown destination. Or is it more fake news?

We might. It didn't begin with this though. I suppose Twitter is just exercising a bit of damage control now.
