Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

The fact that he is doing what he said he would do is to be admired.
Everything else, the lies etc and complete rubbish that comes out of his mouth is just deplorable. Almost impossible to believe but he gets worse by the day.

Australian author Mem Fox held and questioned by US border control when trying to enter America.

It's crystal clear that this is directly linked to Mr. Trump's efforts to ban Muslims from the United States. Oh wait…
Try getting the full story. The link you've offered doesn't give the reason that she was detained.
Quote:
Not because I was Mem Fox the writer – nobody knew that – I was just a normal person like anybody else. They thought I was working in the States and that I had come in on the wrong visa. I was receiving an honorarium for delivering an opening keynote at a literacy conference, and because my expenses were being paid, they said: “You need to answer further questions.” So I was taken into this holding room with about 20 other people and kept there for an hour and 40 minutes, and for 15 minutes I was interrogated.

US immigration is notorious as it is. My clients used to ask to enter the US "anywhere except Miami" and even I had a gun pulled on me at McCarran back in '97 for the silliest reason in the World.

That was the point I was trying to make.
Maybe all the news articles coming out about Muslims being detained at US airports is actually business as usual and the whole victimhood aspect is simply being played up by the media?

Is this the horrible, nasty, mean, naughty, main stream media?

The ones that dont provide 'alternative facts' and instead just provide 'facts'?

I imagine that is of great comfort to the late Mohammed Alis son, as well as all those green card holders who were temporarily prevented from being able to go home.

Exactly. I don't like big military spending, and don't agree with this. But he is doing what he said he would, there shouldn't be any surprise.
Donald will need to build new bases to park all the new equipment and additional troops.

Standby for nasty scenes in the House as they fight to have new bases in their State

In the latest bizarre Oval Office photo-shoot, is it me, or does Kellyanne Conway look like she's about to initiate a Babestation session?

Disrespect to the President! No way she should be sitting down when everyone else is standing - including him.

New York Expects Fewer Foreign Tourists, Saying Trump Is to Blame.

Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics, an international firm that forecasts travel trends said the annual number of foreign visitors to the United States could fall by 6.3 million between 2016 and 2018.
Because of reactions to Mr. Trump’s words and actions.

Not surprising really, a general perception that the US is less welcoming plus the stories of stress-full border controls.

It is probably not so bad in reality but most people rely on perception?

So the tourist trade could be some billions down?

U.S. immigration has always been a pain. Even I have stories, and (1) I come from a non-controversial country (2) I am relatively innocuous/plain vanilla/non-threatening looking (3) I have a spotless immigration record and squeaky clean papers (4) I don't share a name with some gal on a criminal/terrorist/whatever list.

I have not flown in or out of the country since Monsieur Le President took office, but from the perspective of a potential traveler/tourist from abroad, all the stories one reads and hears are not particularly enticing to traveling to the USA at the moment. Whether real or perceived, I agree with you, the outsider tourist just does not feel like (s)he wants to deal with any issues especially if on vacation, and there are so many other places in the world to visit - I honestly don't blame them.

Between this and the President shutting down the whole freaking Palm Beach in their high season every time he pops down to Florida (a lot), they are in for a potential whole lot of missed tourism revenues.

Business people will still travel as needed, but, for example, they are already talking about moving some of our annual global conferences outside of the USA, to allow clients and business associates a hassle-free travel experience.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

I can say that I am probably very unlikely to have any problems at the USA border - but there is NO way I'd visit the USA in the next 4 years. And I know most of my friends feel the same, be they Swiss, French or Brits.

Crack open that absinthe Odile, we'll come your way instead!!!

Indeed I am/we are overdue a visit to Switzerland, it's been (gasp!) three years since my last trip there.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Must say I'm glad we got our trip over last year before all this blew up. Even if I wasn't hassled as an "ex" citizen, I'd be worried by possible delays in getting through border control.

That said we whisked through in the fastest time ever last September. Couldn't believe how quickly it all happened.

Why not?

And what do you think will change in four years?

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Never been to the US - but either the coverage of these incidents has been increasing (hello twitter, FB) or there has been a slow but continual "tightening of the screws" over the last years.

Remember this?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...-airport-again

(actually, I didn't even know he has detained for a 3rd time, I only remembered the reports about the 2nd detainment...)

The only difference is this: you won't get an apology these days ;-)

It's difficult to assess the actual impact on tourism. It will probably be a multi-year development. Tourist operators need some time to "develop" alternative spots.

How so?

The only people exempt post WW2 are those born in 1959 (aka ME).
