Sorry MusicC- I hate to do this, but really YOU are the one here insulting peoples' intelligence
Where?

Because I have different opinion? It translates as offensive?

Because I have protected your right to post your opinions for years (I certainly personally seriously disagreed with) when they differed than the majority and you were struggling against insults?

I take that as a mod's role.

Now - as my own personal political views, there is not an instance I would try to be offensive against somebody with a different opinion.

As I keep saying, I do not communicate to find ideas I already have. I support those who want to bring something different to the table and construct.

Reagen and Schwarzenegger went into politics, not the top job.
And Grant and Eisenhower, among others, went straight to the top job with no previous political experience, Trump is hardly the first.

?

They were both commanding generals of the army (during wartime), career military men with serious experience in Washington.

A far cry from Trump...

Which has led Oprah to think maybe she could do it too.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...-a7607441.html

The POTUS hasn't done his apprenticeship and the irony is incredible.
This wouldn't be the same Oprah who had a hissy fit and cried racism because a shopkeeper in Zürich didn't know who she was?

Yeah, if she becomes POTUS, Trump's crazy tweets will in comparison appear restrained and thoughtful.

Shouldn't Joe Public bashing away on his social media outlets be trying to emulate the POTUS as a paragon of society and role model rather than the other way around?

Not at all, and again. Having different opinions and personal taste is totally fine, but I linked to exactly where you were insulting the intelligence on many here by saying that we 'just' believe what the Press has told us about Trump at face value, rather than using our own judgement. And that IS, really insulting.

As for the rest of your post, it is totally irrelevant here. Logging off as this is the last thing I want to do.

No. It's demeaning to make the assumption, that people form their opinions from the media. A lot of the ex-pats here are in Switzerland for the precise reason that they're a damned sight more intelligent than your average media hack. I don't include myself here, but there's a substantial number of EF members whose entire working life is based upon their ability to analyse facts in one field or another. Such people tend to take time to form an opinion and are rarely swayed by the media.

For the majority of us, we've had 40+yrs to form an opinion of Trump as a person in the public eye. He's blown his own trumpet for an awful long time and it would take a major sea change for that opinion to alter.

It ain't. And if people are taking him for an orange flippant bafoon (with all those petty arguments), I feel they are just showing their own lack of depth seasoned with a decent dose of anger and violence. It is unappetising and will not win them any larger support.
I'm interested in Trump only because what happens in the USA is interconnected with what happens in Europe and I feel there is a lot of insecurity re. Eastern Europe's faith. My grandparents waited all their lives for "the Americans" and now I feel like I'm assisting to a reflux of the Occident, it scares me. I can't really understand where will this lead and his looks, his tan, his tweets are the least important things in my mind. If I had trust in W. Europe Trump would have been just some far away, peculiar, irrelevant for me - leader.

ETA: commenting on his peculiarities derived from his inexperience as politician...just for the lolz and moral self-rightousness is futile, agree.

I believe that in the coming years Eastern Europe will increasingly be standing up for its own interests. Trump has already made quite clear that if NATO is to survive, he expects other member states to step up their commitment. Many European countries have long been playing a hypocritical game of disarming and reducing their military and feeling good about it while actually relying on other NATO countries (that is, mostly the USA) to step in should war actually break out. I think there are going to be some interesting discussions going on here, as well as maybe some redefinition of alliances and diplomatic efforts.

Maybe the European army will be back on the table at some point.

I think this goes way beyond, nobody in their right minds would tweet bullshit like "Any negative polls are fake news" in earnest.
And accusing Obama of wire tapping the White House!

Or accusing the US intelligence agencies of Nazism

Or describing the major US newspapers as Fake News.

We have to take his tweets seriously, they are in written form and from his account.

Talking of tweets, today we have;
Quote:
Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump 9 hours ago
Thank you to @exxonmobil for your $20 billion investment that is creating more than 45,000 manufacturing & construction jobs in the USA!
Whereas in Obama's time, on Mar 6, 2013, we have;
Quote:
ExxonMobil Major Projects plans to invest about $190 billion
over the next five years
Source

In comparison $20Billion is relatively small.
It is anyway probably part of the $190Billion five year plan already announced
From the ExxonMobil $20 billion investment press release "Investments began in 2013 and are expected to continue through at least 2022."

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

This show has a long way to run yet...

Quote:
President Trump used Twitter on Tuesday to again bash predecessor Barack Obama — this time in a false claim about Guantanamo Bay prisoner releases — and to promote the release of the new House health care bill.

Trump said that "122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!"

However, more more than 90% of those detainees were released during the George W. Bush administration, not that of Obama.
Quote:
A report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said that of the 122 Gitmo detainees who returned to the battlefield, only nine of them were released after Obama took office in January 2009.
Wait a sec...is the Office of the Director of National Intelligence fake news as well?

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Meanwhile, there are subtle indications that the Trump administration is not quite as finely tuned a machine as we had been led to believe...

Quote:
the real estate mogul gathered members of his senior staff — including Bannon, chief of staff Reince Priebus and press secretary Sean Spicer, in addition to his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, senior adviser Jared Kushner — in the Oval Office on Friday, March 3. Sources told CNN that the president voiced his frustration at the meeting, telling his close confidants that he is "frustrated that things are not going more smoothly" and that "nonstop leaks [are] undermining his administration
Quote:
Shortly after the meeting, Trump left to Mar-a-Lago, his luxurious Florida estate, where he continued to be upset according to multiple outlets.
When the president vented to friend and Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy at dinner, the conservative media executive later told The Washington Post, "He was pissed. I haven't seen him this angry."]
Diddums. He's upset.

Sessions "recused" himself. I have never heard that word. What does it mean in the context of what Sessions was talking about?

It's resigning from a position of responsibility because of a conflict of interests or lack of impartiality. I'd only heard of it in the strictly legal context, e.g. jury duty.

Quote:
Search Resultsrecuse
rɪˈkjuːz/
verbNorth American

verb: recuse; 3rd person present: recuses; past tense: recused; past participle: recused; gerund or present participle: recusing
  1. challenge (a judge or juror) as unqualified to perform legal duties because of a potential conflict of interest or lack of impartiality.
"he was recused when he referred to the corporation as ‘a bunch of villains’"

    • (of a judge) excuse oneself from a case because of a potential conflict of interest or lack of impartiality.
"it was the right of counsel to ask a judge to recuse himself from continuing to hear a case because of bias"
