You don't have to be a "liberal elite" to realize that discriminating against a particular group of people is wrong. If it's truly about the money (which it's not, but I'll humor you), why not just say that transgender individuals can serve in the military, but that the U.S. taxpayer won't foot the bill for reassignment surgery? Why kick them out?

I'd say it's because it's becoming more socially acceptable and therefore more available.

Look at Chaz Bono and more recently, Kaitlyn Jenner. It was only a few decades ago that gay people had to stay in the closet, and there wasn't even a mention of transgender. Then it was okay to be gay, but not openly if serving in the military. Then it was okay to be openly gay in the military. And now anything goes.

As for why bother if the parts are clearly identifiable (so to speak), a person might physically have the parts of one gender but still identify as the other. Gender reassignment helps reconcile those conflicts.

Viagra is part of standard medical coverage. "Military" includes not just those on active duty, deployed or whatever, but also many department of defense workers, some of whom need their blue pills. Shrug.


Edited to add. The military provides medical coverage for many retired servicemen (and women). Hence, viagra.
