The question is; do you prefer power sources that continue whatever the weather and continue to keep fridges, freezers and, for example, dam warning systems running or not?
On Aug 25 sustained wind speeds at the plant were predicted at 40mph. Just about every wind farm would remain operating at that speed.

It smacks a bit of "on the job training" but, hey, it's a start.
I would think that applies to each and every POTUS. The difference appears to be most are aware right from the start if not before.

OTOH you don't become billionaire without "using" your personnel well, without getting the best of their abilities. So I wonder to what extent that appearance is just smoke and mirrors.

Due to Harvey wind power production dropped by approximately 800 megawatts, with a regional operation rate of about 47 percent.

Source

No wind farm was permanently damaged.

Excuse my lack of knowledge.

Isn't there a difference between a shut down procedure and a shut down?

I don't think that you can stop a Nuclear power station cold, flick a switch and the reactors stop?

I am told that Nuclear power is statistically very safe, it comes from trusted sources so I guess I should accept it. BUT Coming from a family that marched on the first Aldermaston CND march, I remain skeptical. I mean what is the reference pt. for statistically? Statistically in relation to what? What are the examining criteria? etc. etc.

This is interesting, although the nuclear engineer that i knew refused to tell me didley squat about Nuclear

Yep, maybe his business acumen is up there, or as up there as it gets with a multi million dollar inherited leg-up

It's not a question of his wealth, though. None of that will particularly help when it comes to global diplomacy and military nous. I'm not sure a searingly arrogant and narcissistic approach to negotiating is going to do him or the US any favours so let's hope "his generals" manage to keep him on a tight leash over the coming weeks.

The main nuclear reaction stops immediately; the problem is the reactor is very hot inside and there are also minor nuclear reactions which slowly wind down so if you do not have proper cooling then the reactor insides start to melt. In the Fukishima example, those reactors with proper cooling were cold within four days.

Apples and oranges. As if STP would have remained operational had it been built at Corpus Christi.

The only difference between a scram and a normal "shutdown" is the speed and distance traveled by the control rods. Scram being full speed and full length of the core. A normal shutdown is a controlled insertion until the reactor goes sub critical.
There is no such thing as turning off the reactor once it has gone critical . The core will be either sub-critical, critical or super-critical for the remaining lifetime of the fuel rods. Even when the fuel rods are spent, they will still give off enough neutrons to be dangerous, hence the storage in water pits (water is a neutron moderator).

BWR reactors are self moderating to a point, but only in steady state.

Tomorrow's lesson is the inverse safety relationship between nuclear power and air travel.

Kim jong Un pretty quickly called Trump's bluff about the "fire and fury" tweet & raining down on N.Korea.
Now Trump is tweeting about stopping trading with countries that trade with N. Korea.
Probably another empty threat! Presumably aimed at China where US/China trade is worth over $650 Billion per year. Even if it was possible to stop this huge volume of trade then the after effects would destroy the US economy
China is already Boeing's biggest customer and they are hoping to notch up $900 Billion sales to China over the next 20 years; imagine if this business went to Airbus instead!

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Looks like another major problem will hit the US and Trump soon.

States of emergency have been declared as Hurricane Irma grew into a category 4 storm (some meteorologists think it will grow to category 5) and Wednesday is headed for Puerto Rico which is an unincorporated U.S. territory.

It was hoped Irma would turn away from the US mainland but it looks increasingly likely that it will hit Florida at the weekend
Of course hurricanes are unpredictable and it could still turn away.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Martin, Sint Maarten, St Barthelemy, Saba, St Eustatius, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands.

With September full with cleaning up after Harvey, tax reform, expiration of the federal flood-insurance program, debt ceiling, budget, Children's Health Insurance Program and maybe healthcare - the last thing they need is another major storm.

Ironically the move to cut the federal flood-insurance program is led by Texas Republican representative Jeb Hensarling who might be having second thoughts now!

Edit - I assumed the border wall debate will be delayed!

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

It is hard to believe there will be a major tax reform this year like in 1986; a Trump campaign promise.

The Trump administration hasn’t done nearly as much legwork as the Reagan administration did to prepare for the 1986 tax code overhaul.

President Reagan sent a 436-page report (not including charts and tables) to Congress in May of 1985 that detailed the administrations ideas to simplify the tax code.

So far the Trump administration has only released a broad one-page outline.

IIRC that was about attacking, or threatening to attack, or coming close to attacking, US soil including Hawaii, Guam, etc.

So no, nothing got called (yet).

Any idea how much of Raegan's 436 pages actually aade it into the final law?

Congress has a way of ripping things apart and rewriting them anway. So maybe Trump is right not to do too much leg work up front.

So on that basis you are saying that nothing from Trump's one pager will make it into law?

Does not matter, he will claim it as a win no matter how crappy the result

I'm not sure how good his business skills are, but they can't be that bad considering the return he likely got on his inheritance. Yet seeing how people talk about him you'd expect him to be an utter imbecile.

And there is of course the not exactly trivial fact that he was elected POTUS. He beat multiple competing political machines along the way, that doesn't happen by sheer luck.

The question is if his tone is indeed mostly directed at NK, or if he's perhaps more speaking to his supporters who see THEIR POTUS showing strength and standing up against "yet another Asian commie threat asshole country".

He made a lot of promises during his campaign so another question is if his supporters will react or not if such promises are not kept; which so far seems likely. Of course he may manage to turn things around

So far he has delivered 8% of his campaign promises during the 16% of his first term that has passed by.
