Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Seems to be endless - the twitters and quotes that are causing his media team's heart attacks - or perhaps not. Many of my American friends are saddened at his behavour.

They were already pissed off way before Trump.
This.

I'd be far more concerned if they were coming out in support.

For me it's incredible how freely he expresses himself, as if he was an anonymous user on a public forum.
I don't think he doesn't realise this, it's just part of his strategy to show the world that the most powerful man in the world can say whatever he wishes, the way he wishes, whenever he wishes. The wonders of instant communication and gratification...it's something appealing to his base, be sure of that. He's one of us, the commoners. "Theresa May take care of yourself m'am" it's something many people would probably love to throw in her face - Trump has mad it possible. We can be outraged all we want, stupid he ain't.

Erdogan apparently still has an Ottoman Empire worldview

ERDOGAN WILL CUT TIES WITH ISRAEL IF THE US EMBASSY MOVES
You are reading the "Fake News" Jerusalem Post now, who knew?

Such ties were anyway suspended from 2011 to 2016, it was only last December they named Ambassadors.
Erdogan desperately trying to lever himself into a lead position in the Arab world despite Turkey not being an Arab country and also not having the oil resources to back Turkey buying its way into a lead position.

The US $ will buy you almost 4 Turkish Lira today, up from 1.8 only 4 years ago and with annual inflation 13% Erdogan should spend more time on his domestic policies rather than foreign adventures.!

But how popular are his tweets really?

Obama's — not Trump's — tweets make 2017 top 10 retweet list. Obama had three in the top ten, Trump had zero

We're going to have to agree to differ here.

Not outraged... Disgusted.
And he is most definitely a stupid creature. Playing at being a belligerant asshole won him the Presidency, but he hasn't changed tack, and the same behaviour will lose him the role too.

How Trump turned tide of illegal immigration in first year: Border crossing hits 45-year low

Illegal border crossing at lowest level since 1971!

The numbers, released by the Department of Homeland Security, reflected a stunning turnaround from the nearly nonexistent interior enforcement of immigration laws under President Obama

Except Trump wasn't president for about 4 of those months.

Also:

"U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported 310,531 apprehensions nationwide in fiscal 2017, which ended Sept. 30, a decline of 25 percent from a year earlier and the lowest level since 1971"

So they've just caught fewer people. That spin is amazing.

From your link;
Quote:
Nearly all of the Border Patrol arrests — 303,916 — were along the southwestern border, which the agency said underscored the need for a security wall that Mr. Trump wants to build.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who are responsible for capturing and deporting illegal immigrants, made 110,568 arrests — a 40 percent increase from the previous year.
Quote:
Transnational criminal organizations continue to exploit legal and policy loopholes to help illegal aliens gain entry and get released into the interior of the country.
Now criminal organisations are releasing illegal immigrants in the interior of the country, consequently arrests in the interior of the country are rising and they are falling at the border so the number of illegals entering could be the same!

It might of been Obama's last four months with his ''nearly nonexistent interior enforcement of immigration laws'' that caused interior removals to increase 25%. We'll never know for sure.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Hope the Russian investigation snares Trump, and fast. He seems hell bent on destroying things.

The Guardian: Trump slashes size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase national monuments in Utah

"Bears Ears will be slashed from nearly 1.5m acres to 228,784 acres, while Staircase will be halved from around 2m acres to 1,006,341 acres."

Another explanation might be that people are flocking to get into the US before the wall gets built. (More arrests may mean that the crime rate is declining, just as they may indicate that the crime rate is increasing.)

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Articles speaks of two separate agencies: Border Patrol and ICE. ICE is increasing arrests inside the country, thereby decreasing the incoming flow at the border.

Sounds to me the news of crackdowns in cities are discouraging people from crossing the border.

Although border arrests do not seem to match deportation numbers. So where are they taking them? <cue Morton with a scary conspiracy theory>

If you look at the numbers posted by ICE and Border Patrol it gets pretty murky. I _think_ that the deportations are just ICE (i.e. people who managed to get across the border and get arrested and deported at some later date) and Border Patrol is just people refused entry or otherwise caught trying to enter illegally.

Or maybe not everyone who is arrested it guilty of any crime. In theory border patrol might pick up perfectly legal US Citizens who are for whatever reason close to the border and maybe don't have ID on them (or are darker than cherry blossom pink on the dulux chart).

Not everyone who is arrested is guilty of a crime; you heard of the presumption of innocence? For felonies only 68% were convicted in the US.
