Just laughing at the irony of this. The main thrust of Trump supporters' cheering on the "shithole" comment was that he's saying what everyone is thinking.
I made the huge mistake of telling my OH that Trump thinks he comes from a "shithole" when he got in from work. That led to 15mins of him stomping round the house grumbling a torrent of abuse in Afrikaans and Greek. Now, every time Trump's face comes on tv, OH uses a particularly rude hand gesture that Lewton would understand

You missed the bit about Hitler and blaming the Jews in your quoted piece.
Nobody's defending Livingstone here, but you've only condemned Khan and Umunna when even Theresa May condemned Trump's retweeting of the BF crap...(before she went and hid in the corner and pretended that she hadn't said anything as per bloody usual with that spineless mare.)

Let's be having it right Loz... British policial criticism of Trump reaches across the political divide, race, class, etc...etc...etc...

Apply this to Khan (and it does seem to be the average Londoner's sentiment, to be honest - obviously with exceptions, for the sake of balance ) and everyone is clutching at their pearls and having a meltdown...
Or in the PM's case, clutching the chains of Marley's ghost or King King's anal beads The girl needs a new stylist.

Precisely, which is why I was being pragmatic with regards to highlighting that the previous holders of Khan's role, and the current holder of a comparable role, have all made similar comments to Khan's. It serves to show that Khan is not speaking in isolation. Now that we're all clear that Khan isn't the singular critic, to comment to the contrary would be highly dishonest.

I heard that the treasurer of the parish council of Barton in the Beans has also expressed his disinclination to meet Mr Trump, should he attend the biannual onion show.

It's spreading like wildfire, I tell yiz!

I just love the idea that the mayor of some two-bit post-industrial shithole in the north of England is in any way comparable with the mayor of London (who - in turn - is hardly a global mover and shaker, if we're going to be honest here).

I'm not sure that anyone was comparing the two mayors, or the two cities. But talking of comparing, where are you from, again, DB?

If it was the mayor of the West Midlands it would be a different matter.

Remember that the finest sight that a Brummie can see is the motorway to Manchester. (to paraphrase Samuel Johnson)

I'm from a post-industrial shit hole of even less importance than Manchester.

Shall I share the mayor of Cannock's views on international politics, too?

Highlighting your lack of knowledge of the current UK political system again. Mayor of Greater Manchester, which encompasses my home town, so by default, that would be fighting talk face to face. That aside, some reading material for you:

Judging by his expulsions, I reckon he's been on the prune juice again

Now...can we get back to Trump again please?

Try asking Andy Street, who happens to be the Mayor of the West Midlands.
