US Supreme Court today invalidated a provision of federal law that requires the mandatory deportation of immigrants who have been convicted of some crimes, holding that the law is unconstitutionally vague.

Trump's appointee Justice Neil Gorsuch joined with the more liberal justices for the first time since joining the court to produce a 5-4 majority invalidating the federal statute.

Today’s Court decision means that Congress must close loopholes that block the removal of dangerous criminal aliens, including aggravated felons. This is a public safety crisis that can only be fixed by Congress – House and Senate must quickly pass a legislative fix to ensure violent criminal aliens can be removed from our society. Keep America Safe!

2:34 PM - 17 Apr 2018
Surprised Trump did not attack the SC.

Chances of a fix are small, the problem arose in the first place because Congress failed to agree on a definition of "dangerous criminal aliens"

All but two of the 19 companies paying Trump organisation to produce or distribute Trump-branded products when Trump joined the president race have stopped, according to The Washington Post.

This latest segment from Rachel Maddow gives a good overview of the NY court proceedings and the potential outcomes of the requests by GOP members of Congress to get access to the Mueller files on the investigation from the DOJ (Rod Rosenstein). Potentially setting up Rosenstein to be fired.

If you do not have time to watch the whole video, the second part of the segment (covering the Mueller files etc.) starts as of about 13:00 minutes.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced that the U.S. Treasury plans to issue additional sanctions on Russia following the suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria last week. On Sunday morning, Haley stated that sanctions against Moscow will "be coming down" on Monday.

Now Trump has reportedly put a stop to plans to impose additional sanctions on Russia.
No doubt for good reasons

WH response to Russia sanctions confusion: Blame Nikki Haley

"She got ahead of the curve," National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow told reporters on Tuesday. There might have been some momentary confusion about that."

Haley struck back with a stunning statement later in the day that opened a new rift in the administration and raised questions about the White House's explanation of her comments.
"With all due respect, I don't get confused," she said in a statement.

Trump seems to know what the thug really looked like

Trump probably meant to have written something like " there was no man who threatened you so you could not sketch him"?

What he did write implies the sketch was of the wrong person?

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Trump tweeted the following today (at 4:49 am, local time):

"While Japan and South Korea would like us to go back into TPP, I don’t like the deal for the United States. Too many contingencies and no way to get out if it doesn’t work. Bilateral deals are far more efficient, profitable and better for OUR workers. Look how bad WTO is to U.S."

I wonder if his advisors know that South Korea is not in the TPP. Maybe one of them should tell him.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

As entertaining as the whole shitshow is, America is a laughing stock now and they are facing the very real prospect of dictatorship. It would be stupid to ignore the parallels between Spanky's behaviour and dictators of the past; ejecting voices of dissent, discrediting the media, establishing state sponsored news, attacking the judiciary, lying lying lying. So what do Spanky's supporters do? they ignore them.

I think in years to come we'll look back on this period as one of collective insanity and having been a Spanky supporter will be a badge of shame while the enablers in the Republican party will be held up as examples of the worst of politicians.

Looking forward to the season finale, happily it's very unlikely to be picked up for another season.

You don't have to like Trump, but to say he may become the next dictator is ridiculous. It's this sort of talk that just enables him further.

He didn't say he was unequivocally a dictator, he said you can draw parallels. He is also right, you can draw parallels, especially as he said with the anti-media mentality and the firing/surpression of capable and respected politicians that dared to voice conflicting opinions. Not to mention the numerous scandals he has tried to strongarm/scare/buy into silence, many of which are not even likely discovered yet.

This is a dark time in US politics (and lets face it, world politics in general, we have multiple world superpowers as well as militarily significant lesser powers that are run by strongman tyrants) that will be regarded and taught as such by historians in future, of that I am sure. A time when the US presidency was given to one of the least suitable and mentally unfit candidates in existence, enabled by a political system in need of reform. It will serve as a warning and wake up call to politicians not to take voters for granted, to listen and improve, and I doubt it will be allowed to ever happen again.

Trump isn't a dictator, nor will he ever be. Normal people understand this and get turned off by the exaggeration. In the sanctity of the polling booth they're more likely to express this by putting a cross next to Trump's name, as we saw last time around.

I have enough faith in the checks and balances to doubt that he would pull it off.

I think he's certainly dictatorial, and I'm pretty sure that if he saw a chance to subvert the C&B he'd take it without hesitation.

But I don't think he's smart enough to pull it off.

Not only that, he doesn't have enough friends in the right places to get the votes through to change the constitution.

Unfortunately I forsee things getting worse come 2020.

A lot of pundits think he'll be impeached and removed from office. To be honest I don't see that happening unless the Ds take back both houses in November and there are some serious criminal charges. Not to mention Trump wouldn't go quietly even if this unlikely scenario played out.

Trump will run for re-election. His yuuuge ego pretty much guarantees it. If he loses, either from a viable primary challenge or in the general election, he'll go to court and make an absolute mess of things. People thought Bush v. Gore was messy. Wait until they see Trump vs. USA.
