Do you know who said "If you pluck a chicken one feather at a time no one will notice"? Mussolini.
Naomi wolf wrote a great article on this back in 2007, she identified that in history every dictator takes the same steps. - Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy. - Immigrants, Muslims, EU
- Create secret prisons where torture takes place. - Predates Spanky
- Develop a thug caste or paramilitary force not answerable to citizens. - Tolerance of neo nazis and white supremacists
- Set up an internal surveillance system. - Predates Spanky
- Harass citizens' groups. - Definition of terrorism expanded to include protest groups.
- Engage in arbitrary detention and release. - Not yet I think
- Target key individuals. - Hell yeah, Mueller, Mccabe, Comey, Rosenstein, the list is huge.
- Control the press. - Fox is in his pocket, anyone else is 'fake news'
- Cast criticism as espionage and dissent as treason. - 'Enemies of the people'
- Subvert the rule of law. - daily
| | | | | As far as #6 is concerned, some of the stuff with asylum seeker detention, separating kids and the like creates the same kind of disarray.

| | | | | Do you even know what totalitarianism is? Leaving aside your melodramatic list, do you honestly think that America (Land of the Free) would ever accept a totalitarian state?

It's not like half (OK, probably a bit less) of America wouldn't like to impose a theocratic regime, which is in direct opposition to any "Land of the Free" status.

Yeah, it'll never happen to them.

Why are we whambulancing over democratically voted president again? I guess people who haven't lived totalitarianism might have troubles identifying it. It is a dramatic sounding word, innit. Real totalitarianism would come inconspicuously. Not in a form of entertaining political burlesque. I wonder why this democratically voted president has the longest thread on the EF, ever.

Yeah, it'll never happen to them. | | | | | Never is a big word. Everything can be attacked and eroded, given enough time and malice. Gun rights? Free speech? Can you be so sure that they are safe for all time?
But most countries that I can think of don't have as many checks and balances in place. Technically, it would be far easier for a dictator to seize power there.

If they are allowed to keep their guns, its all good.
I think what we are trying to say is there is a gradual erosion of civil liberties going on, not soley attributable to the Spankmonkey, but he is endorsing those and trying to erode more civil liberties, but as long as he doesn't mess with the gun laws its MAGA. | Quote: | | | | | where Presidents can be impeached when they step too far out of line.

Only happened once, this one is getting close to it though, he's done more then enough to warrant it, problem is he seems to own the Senate, Congress and Republicans.

When you do a Google search to find the meaning of a 'new word', and the 2nd result is a previous post by an EF mod. #nonethewiser

He is a never ending source of gossip. Mixed emotions, if and when he goes it'll be a great loss to all us EF users.

People are so into him (in a good and bad way) because he choses to occupy them exactly as they need. Rule no. 1 of media popularity. I gotta give it to him, despite disliking the whole circus, but it looks like he gets stuff done. Plus, nobody else made Putin nervous before, осторожно!

This is the second time I notice, you actually claim Trump "chooses". | | | | | Yep. And if he did not matter to people they would choose to ignore him. Which they do not. Ignoring Trump is the only thing that could possibly slow him down, I think. He is feeding off controversy, and if he runs out of it he tweets for some more. It is not dumb, takes very little time/effort/cash. In the meantime he is doing his presidential stuff.

I predict that they will be quoting Trump as soon as he starts criticizing the next unpopular Republican to move into the White House.
