Seems a bit harsh on Reagan, not that I'm in the habit of defending him but his policies brought an end to the USSR leaving the US as the only superpower at the time. I can't reconcile that with Spanky swanning in unprepared, pressing some dictator flesh, saluting a couple of men in uniform and declaring 'peace in our time'

And who did Reagan win against? Carter, the competent but perceived unlucky file muncher.
The Reagan camp also very likely conspired with the Iranian government to trade certain frozen Shah assets against the embassy hostages (they were released on Inauguration day, IIRC).

I didn't think the GOP let him run, I thought they were as horrified as everyone else at the prospect, but unable to stop it, no?

They thought he could engage a lot of voters (for Jeb).
Worked brilliantly.

He was perceived as a useful idiot.

Since certain events in the past, German politics usually shies away from having any kind of useful idiot, perceived or real, to catch some voters.

Because assuming your opponent is an idiot is usually the first but most grave mistake you can make.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Bob Woodward - a famous investigative journalist from Watergate - has a new book on Trump. It's original reporting, mostly via interviews with his numerous contacts throughout Washington (from what I can tell). The Washington Post has an advanced copy they highlight a few of the revelations, they're nuts... from incompetence to malice and everything in-between.

These jumped out at me:
Quote:
Dowd [Trump's lawyer] told Trump: “Don’t testify [to Robert Mueller]. It’s either that or an orange jumpsuit.”
Quote:
After Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad launched a chemical attack on civilians in April 2017, Trump called Mattis and said he wanted to assassinate the dictator. “Let’s f'ing kill him! Let’s go in. Let’s kill the f'ing lot of them,” Trump said, according to Woodward. Mattis told the president that he would get right on it. But after hanging up the phone, he told a senior aide: “We’re not going to do any of that. We’re going to be much more measured.”
Quote:
At the urging of advisers, [Trump] then condemned white supremacists and neo-Nazis [at Charlottesville], but almost immediately told aides, “That was the biggest f'ing mistake I’ve made” and the “worst speech I’ve ever given,” according to Woodward’s account.
Quote:
Trump told Porter that Sessions was a “traitor” for recusing himself from overseeing the Russia investigation, Woodward writes. Mocking Sessions’s accent, Trump added, “This guy is mentally retarded. He’s this dumb Southerner. … He couldn’t even be a one-person country lawyer down in Alabama.”
Quote:
Cohn, a Wall Street veteran, tried to tamp down Trump’s strident nationalism regarding trade. According to Woodward, Cohn “stole a letter off Trump’s desk” that the president was intending to sign to formally withdraw the United States from a trade agreement with South Korea. Cohn later told an associate that he removed the letter to protect national security and that Trump did not notice that it was missing.
Quote:
[John] Kelly said of Trump: “He’s an idiot. It’s pointless to try to convince him of anything. He’s gone off the rails. We’re in Crazytown. I don’t even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I’ve ever had.”
Quote:
Trump questioned why the government was spending resources in the [Korean Peninsula] at all. “We’re doing this in order to prevent World War III,” Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told him. After Trump left the meeting, Woodward recounts, “Mattis was particularly exasperated and alarmed, telling close associates that the president acted like — and had the understanding of — ‘a fifth- or sixth-grader.’
Quote:
“You’re a goddamn staffer!” Bannon screamed at [Ivanka], telling her that she had to work through Priebus like other aides. “You walk around this place and act like you’re in charge, and you’re not. You’re on staff!” Ivanka Trump, who had special access to the president and worked around Priebus, replied: “I’m not a staffer! I’ll never be a staffer. I’m the first daughter.”

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Similar article in CNN about the Woodward book!

About the idea that Trump met with Mueller the lawyers had a rehearsal with Trump and after that disaster
Quote:
Then, in an even more remarkable move, Dowd and Trump's current personal attorney Jay Sekulow went to Mueller's office and re-enacted the mock interview. Their goal: to argue that Trump couldn't possibly testify because he was incapable of telling the truth.
"He just made something up. That's his nature," Dowd said to Mueller.

Basically it is an unholy accommodation!

97% of US Christian Evangelicals say their core value is "it is necessary to follow the teachings of Christ in one’s personal and family life" (Pew Research).
Now 80% of them vote for a twice divorced man who it is claimed regularly had extra marital affairs with models and porn stars......
Could it be you mix up the teaching of Christ with the Old Testament?

Indeed that was strange. Specially in the case of Aretha Franklin. But then again, turns out the best part of the funeral was packed with people behaving tasteless.
I wonder if she turned in her coffin during this ceremony.

I'm not really sure about that. German politics seems to be full of useful idiots. But maybe they get screened thoroughly beforehand to make sure they are genuinely as incompetent as they appear.

Bob Woodward is someone I would trust. It'll be interesting to see the Trump apologists try to weasel their way out of this massive crater.

Can believe alleged wife-batterer Bannon would have a problem with a powerful woman.

Seven tweets from Spanky yesterday calling Woodward's fiction including quotes from General (Secretary of Defense) James Mattis and General (Chief of Staff) John Kelly.

Pity in his quote Mattis chose to repeat Trump's fiction that NATO allies have "taken on more of the burden" when nothing has changed; damages the credibility of his whole denial.

From the official minutes of the July 2018 Summit meeting
Quote:
We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to all aspects of the Defence Investment Pledge agreed at the 2014 Wales Summit, and to submit credible national plans on its implementation, including the spending guidelines for 2024

"Unhinged", "Chaotic", "Out of his depth", "Idiot" the same phrases appear again and again in reports from inside the white house.

Isn't it amazing how the fake media manage to get their stories so straight.

In two weeks it will be old (fake) news, the book released in paperback and on Kindle. The 40 odd (in both senses) percent of the US electorate that love him, will continue to love him.

Bring on 9 November and hope that the yanks turn out in high numbers.

Twitter said Tuesday that not even President Donald Trump is immune from being kicked off the platform if his tweets cross a line with abusive behavior.

The social media company's rules against vitriolic tweets offer leeway for world leaders whose statements are newsworthy, but that "is not a blanket exception for the president or anyone else," Twitter legal and policy chief Vijaya Gadde told POLITICO in an interview alongside CEO Jack Dorsey.

Now there is an Internet site claiming that Ivanka Trump turned up at McCain's funeral uninvited, here.

I do not know if Ivanka was invited or not; I do know this is one very weird presidency!

Don't know much about US laws or traditions. Does one need an invitation to a funeral? I believe it is not unusual in this country for people to do so.

Sorry if this is a little morbid, but I am generally curious.
