But only 36 states had elections for governor!

And even if the Dems are up 6, they still only have 1/3 of the governors.

Tom
It depends on which states. Govenors have an impact in drawing congressional districts. Michigan, for example elected both a Democratic governor and outlawed gerrymandering. Delighted that walker lost in WI.

The actual number of Democratic govenors matters less than the structure of the congressional districts in specific states.

Over 100 women elected to the house, of varying ages, ethnicities and sexual orientation. Leadership of house committees will change. Am looking forward to seeing Maxine Waters lead the financial whatever committee. Should be entertaining if nothing else.

Some good, some bad results depending on your perspective. Not a blue wave necessarily, but certainly some change.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Before Trump it was 28 years since a Republican Presidential Candidate had won Wisconsin, Michigan or Pennsylvania.
So some people expected the Dems to do well in these States, there was indeed improvement. In Michigan and Wisconsin, Democrats are expected to flip attorney general and the secretary of state’s office.

Not quite, we have a family member (US citizen) who has been trying for two years now to get his wife to join him in America, now he, a senior medical doctor and pillar of the community fears he'll be forced to leave his home country to be able to live with his wife. I only have friends experiences to go on but my understanding was that pre-Spanky days bringing your spouse was easy?
I am no fan of Spanky, but I do not believe he’s screwed up immigration any more than already. If you are married, you may apply for a permanent resident visa for your spouse. Your spouse gets an immediate visa number, but still has to be investigated. The particulars of whether or not she can come really depend on her criminal history, if she has one, and whether or not she’s ever overstayed a visa in the past, probably other stuff I am forgetting. The easy part is that you get to be investigated without waiting. But you still go through all the bullshit. And it is a load of bullshit.

Isn’t the purpose of multiple moderators that moderators don’t moderate threads they are active in? Why on earth would you want to be a volunteer mod and deal with all the attendant crap if you can’t voice your own opinion just like the rest of us? I believe it is an unrealistic expectation.

The opinions of the Yemeni, Venezuelan, Libyan, Syrian, etc. members of EF would be sorely missed.

In this case all relevant bullshit(which didn't seem *that* bad tbf) had been completed and rubber stamped but when she turned up for her final interview, which we'd been told was a formality she was told all her paperwork was in order and normally she'd get the visa that day but they'd been told "no visas for Iranians"

So much name calling. Looks like we can't talk politics without bursting into accusations and "surreptitiously" insulting other people. From where I stand I partially agree with terrifisch when she said that:

But that doesn't seem to be the case here. What I see when I read every single post in this thread is "mostly" a regular discussion. Of course counterarguments always try to somehow shut down the opposite argument. In my 12 years in EF I don't remember any case when moderators bullied or marginalized other people.

It'd be nice for a change when people don't get their panties in a knot over every other statement that they disagree with.
I don't see that people are 'talking politics' or 'shutting down the opposite argument' what I see causing critical comments is not someone holding an opinion but refusing or being unable to justify it. Such as when people post something contentious or easily disprovable falsehoods, then run away when called out on it, or when smileys, or CAPITALS! are used in lieu of argument or when gut instinct trumps fact.

Yep, that's correct. And I can't remember the last time I moderated this thread. It must have been months, maybe years ago.

I didn't even react to the "cretin", "simpleton" and "parrot" epithets, unless you consider "(not a) happy little bunny" to be name-calling -- which, for the record, it was not intended to be and which, I suspect, doesn't resonate with an American as it does with English-speaking people. (Yes, that was an insult. )

Just to show how broken the US voting System is, at present, in the Senate elections, the Dems have around 41m votes and the Reps around 32m votes...and this has translated to +3 seats for the Reps. Democracy indeed.
Keep in mind that not all Senate seats were up this time. There are two senators per state and they each serve 6 year terms. No state has both senate seats on the ballot at the same time.

Also, if he doesn't accomplish anything in the next 2 years, he can blame it on the democrats. knowing that he doesn't have a majority in the congress, he could even come up with more spectacular and bizarre proposals. And don't forget that his politics is mainly about shouting and twitter. There will be no change to that.

All in all, it wouldn't surprise me if he will be re-elected. Just to be clear: I wouldn't be happy with that.
I'm agree.

...The truly remarkable thing is that the Democrats have done so well in the House, which is and long has been cripplingly gerrymandered in the Republicans' favour.
Sorta. Yes there's been some spectacular gerrymandering but voters are notoriously wishy-washy. I posted it somewhere above, but basically every sitting president has lost a chunk of the house in the mid-terms. Voters always seem to want change, but yet nothing really changes...

Quote:
Sure, 2 per state. House in theory population based, but we all know that it isn't really the case there either.
How ya figure? Allocation of seats and redistricting happens every 10 years after the census. Some states lose and some states gain seats depending on how the population has shifted. From 2010:

Assuming there's no recount or that it comes out the same even with a recount, Walker has been ousted in WI. So that's good for the governor's seat. However both state houses have remained in Republican hands, so it could be a bit of a stalemate.

Agree on the 2nd comment.

How'd ya figure WI? The Wisconsin AG was a Republican. Now it will be a Democrat. The SOS is a Democrat, and he has been SOS since 1982. His family goes way back and odds are he will remain in office probably until he dies. Besides, in WI the SOS is largely a ceremonial position. Elections are overseen by the Elections Commission.

Well that sucks. Country of origin may be an issue. I think certain countries are more discriminated against than others, i.e., the very stupid travel ban. That is complete and utter bullshit. I’m not sure how banning a country of origin works....my husband is Dutch. This is a situation though where I’d be contacting my senator and House of Representatives, and probably media, aclu too- though i also see why they might not wish to, but anyway, that absolutely sucks.

Usually that's the case, yes, although IIRC the GOP did quite nicely under W in 2002. So there you have it, Trump just needs a nice, juicy war against some brown people if he wants to restore a Republican majority in the House next time around.

Clinton also did OK in the preceding election, in 1998.

ETA: And Google tells me that the Democrats did spectacularly well (especially in the Senate) under FDR in 1934, as well.
