Fantastic how they keep the borders tight during a manhunt. What a joke!
What do you want? Every inch of the thousands upon thousands of miles of borders manned 24/7? Even before Schengen, thousands of miles of borders were unmanned. I remember my brother falling down a hill in Kuchl (in the snow) and having to scramble back up because he'd crossed the border and didn't have his passport on him.

plus these people have an experience in crossing borders/sea illegally, walking thousands of miles in extreme conditions.

What I would expect from a city like Berlin is to lock down the perimeter. Since this was an unusual event, I would engage the equivalent of the national guard and seal the country. That's how things get done. On a European level, I would ramp up border checks and increase police presence...but noooo, this guy supposedly leaves Germany and travels to Italy via France. How on earth is that even possible?

don't forget that they started the manhunt 2 days after the attack. He probably escaped Germany before his name/ID was broadcasted.

Same reason that hundreds of men were arrested in Cologne and then let go and early the next morning the police commissioner puts out a report saying the NZE celebrations passed off without incident.

Lack of discipline due to an incompetent administration , an absurdly stupid PM who waives EU wide laws protecting the EU's borders and gets away with it and a public desperate to believe that everything will be fine.

I flew out of Schoenefeld yesterday. A few more police than usual, but nothing special. Security lines were terrible, but that just looked like holiday rush. No extra bag screening or anything like that. Just the usual East German malaise.

To be fair - flying would not be the preferred method of escape due to the electronic footprint and physical containment.

America's never been able to seal their borders, so why do you expect more of Europe? The best you can do is put checks on roads and trains at border crossings, but you can never seal the borders. And more to the point, why the hell should we because of one random prick!

Petty crim - prick - dead - end of!

Now let's move on to the hijacking of a flight in Malta.

Exactly.

I went to pick my OH up from ZRH yesterday and wish I hadn't bothered. It was so crowded in the arrivals 2 area, and my OH had managed to lose his suitcase airside, so muggins here was waiting almost 2hrs for him. Security wasn't more visible than usual, but apprently the security checks at Manchester were horrendous. OH was in the queue for over an hour there (at 6am) and the queue went right back to the Swiss baggage drop.

I flew from Zurich to Berlin Tegel yesterday. Nothing special in Zurich, yes, extra police but they have had that for some time, and very quiet in Tegel.

I meant criminals escaping West Berlin at the time. Yes, anyone from the East to the West was something different

Does anyone else notice the strange things in this report?
10.34 a.m. <<The body is covered as Italian police cordon off an area>> (picture 3) ..... in broad daylight? The body is still there after the incident happened at 3 a.m.?

That's not unusual. You don't disturb the scene until forensics have completed their work.

Right, let's see, semi truck - Christmas Market - Berlin, ring a bell?

Compare this with the Boston bombing and you have a completely different type of police response. In Berlin's case, this wasn't necessarily the police which messed up but the whole security apparatus which seems to be incapacitated by bureaucracy and silly laws.

The entire thing was only possible to happen due to police-slackness. Not due to politics .... or maybe THAT IS the political strategy?
Could you explain what you mean by "police-slackness"?

lol, this must be the greatest myth of the migrant crisis. To think that they've walked thousands of miles, when there are busses, trains, cars, etc...

Extreme conditions, as in, normal weather? I haven't heard reports of any refugees heading to the North pole
