Re: Reports of shots outside UK Parliament

It's the EU's fault.

Once we're out it'll be different. You'll see!

Depends if it's on the list of uniform additions. Our school, for example, would allow you to wear poppies from 1. Nov up to and including the 11th., and Blue Peter badges but any other kind of stuff wasn't allowed.
We weren't allowed to have the poppies on our uniform but could wear them on your coat. Personally, I've never worn a poppy and my dad didn't before me. Mind you, it would have been a hazard on his work overalls and was strictly verboten for me in the food manufacture industry. It was quite a surprise to begin working in an office at the age of 40 and see how many people obsessed about such symbolism.

The poppy thing is starting to get out of hand these days. When I was a kid, you bought one and wore it on Remembrance Sunday. You didn't wear it for three months beforehand and make a big fuss about everyone else having to wear one too.

It's a powerful symbol, but one which I feel is being cheapened by the obsessively conformist nature of 2010s Britain.

To be honest, I feel the same about the proliferation of flags in what I would consider inappropriate contexts: rear view mirrors, doormats, cushions. It isn't a sign of patriotism - it is a sign of a complete absence of respect for what the flag symbolises. A flag belongs on a flagpole, not under a guest's bum.
