London Bridge is down

No it isn't fake news, this is the code to be used when the Queen dies. [was: it is the code that means the Queen of GB has died].

The big question is, will Prince Charles Windsor be a good King and follow on with his mother's success?

I read today that the Queen's title "Head of the Commonwealth" cannot be passed on to Charles, he has to be elected. Now that might be upsetting for many people in the world. Imagine India & Pakistan having a full blown war, and Charles is out shooting pheasants with no mobile!

.

No, it's top secret. Don't want to upset the peasants.

Well on second thoughts, and as you are a furriner and don't believe me, https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...-london-bridge

But ignore the code word, how will Charles work out? For me he is too vanilla.

They also published it in Buckingham Palace dialect, so all the relatives can read it,

http://diepresse.com/home/ausland/welt/5186519/Wenn-die-Queen-stirbt-heisst-es_London-Bridge-is-down

One night the Queen Mother, (The mother of our present queen, widow of the last King George VI ) came home late to London and saw hundreds of soldiers marching about in front of her palace. She asked the body guard, "What is going on here?" He replied, "They are practising for your funeral parade"

I think he'll be just fine. Very different, of course.

I think he fully understands the responsibilities that come with the job and he will tone down his urge to pick sides in discussions.

This is old news, almost a week old, and your (as usual) weirdly worded thread made it sound like the queen had just died. The fact you always have to be asked to provide links is in itself an epic facepalm.

The article demonstrates how utterly absurd monarchy is.

When all this comes to pass, I can imagine feeling very embarrassed to be British.

It was Brexit what done it!

Seriously: I did so much reading last summer on the subject of government and democracy that I realised that I couldn't object to the EU and still support an unelected head of state.

It has confused the buggery out of almost everyone I know!

1) The royal line is chosen by God, so Charles will be king or the whole point of hereditary monarchy is overturned.
2) The UK has a constitutional monarchy so the monarch has very little power (which if they used could actually cause a constitutional crisis and bring down the monarchy) so it doesn't matter how well he kings.

Re: London Bridge is down

If you take the trouble to read the article linked above to the left leaning Guardian newspaper, you can learn that the Queen is head of state to 15 countries, and a figurehead for another 36, which include about 30% of the world's population.

This same Queen upset most Australians in November 1975 after she removed the elected Labour Prime Minister and imposed the opposition Liberal leader until a fresh election was held. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_A...utional_crisis

Without the unfortunate cock up after the Boston Tea Party, President Trump would now be just a prime minister, and answer to London.

So not quite the pale figurehead you might imagine. She governs a lot of people, like it or not, but please accept she is not simply a figure head.

Indeed. She has way too much power for an unelected ruler, even if she rarely exercises it.

I strongly suspect the next monarch will be head of state of far fewer countries than the current one. QEII's death will be an excellent opportunity to clear away some of those cobwebs and start afresh.

Re: London Bridge is down

When you look at Western Europe since the year 1800, the turmoil experienced in most European countries without a royal leader has been greatest in those without a continuing royal leadership.

Think of France, Germany, Russia & Italy with millions killed following their dictators. Then think of all the countries with a royal family: UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Spain & Luxembourg and then compare their citizens' comparatively peaceful lives: the exception being Kaiser William's Germany.

On balance I believe that someone has to do the job, and why change a system that works fairly well, for one that must change every 4 or 5 years?

(Yes we could also consider Austria - Hungary, Yugoslavia, Greece, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria. But let's keep it simple !)

...and one of the world's oldest functioning democracies has been a republic since 1776.

Comparing the United Kingdom in 2017 to Russia in 1917 is fun, but doesn't really tell us much about what a British republic might be like.
