It's easy to learn the basics, but it's very difficult to become fluent in. When I was at school, we were told it was one of the hardest languages to learn, and that German was one of the easiest, but this view appears to have changed with the dawn of the internet.
My German colleagues tell me that German is hard for non-German's to learn, and the English is relatively easy. They found French difficult. To me it's easier than German - which is to be expected, since English is merely very bad French (Pascal?).
