Except it isn't the norm. There is no real censorship to speak of in the English speaking world.

There's plenty of social pressure on people not to be dicks, and it was rightly applied in this case.

But that isn't the same as censorship. In fact, facing consequences for breaking social taboos is a perfectly normal part of human life and always has been.
You're right, there isn't enforced censorship, however there are plenty who would like to change that. Just look at Katie Hopkins. She says something, people are offended and call for her to be sacked.

That is still not censorship. It is simply the consequence of embarrassing her employer.

The effect is still the same. No due process or gauge of public opinion, just shout loudest and you can silence someone. Same with Kelvin MacKenzie. Very concerning.

I had a friend who was very earnest and left wing and who was very proud of his anti-racist credentials. It didn't stop him from perpetuating anti-semitic stereotypes as he made jokes about Michael Howard, a prominent British Jew, being like a vampire.

Ah, but, you see. Michael Howard is a Tory. So that's all right then.

Anyway, after the usual "some of my best friends..." bullshit, he blocked me.
Yeah. On Facebook, before the referendum, former friends of my wife were posting their bs about why Brexit will be great, too many east europeans, pushing up the rents, stealing all the jobs, claiming benefits and filling the A&E wards at hospitals. My response.

"Oh. Like my eastern European wife, you mean"

In reply. "Of course not. She's Polish and she's been our friend for years"

That cleared that one up for me.. We miss them dearly. I don't use Facebook anymore.

Is that perhaps a consequence of the employer's need for profitability? So when in doubt they fire the artist in an attempt at damage control.

I find Boehmermann's poem comparable, contrary to Griffin he still has his position.
