Liberals would have complained like conservatives are complaining now?

Re: Going too far?

Actually, there was lots of nasty stuff targeted at obama - hanging/lynching in effigy, etc, while he was in office.

The thing by Griffin was in poor taste, but no more poor than all the racist images from the anti Obama crowd. It seems that it got a huge rise out of Fox news, but for the most part, the outrage is contained mostly there.

Re: Going too far?

Double standards, as ever.

I had a friend who was very earnest and left wing and who was very proud of his anti-racist credentials. It didn't stop him from perpetuating anti-semitic stereotypes as he made jokes about Michael Howard, a prominent British Jew, being like a vampire.

Ah, but, you see. Michael Howard is a Tory. So that's all right then.

Anyway, after the usual "some of my best friends..." bullshit, he blocked me.

Same with some of the nasty stuff written about Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher. Apparently you can be really bloody nasty about older women as long as they're Tory older women.

This revolting depiction of Mr Trump doesn't surprise me at all. It simply follows on from the painting of Mr Trump in the nude with a micropenis.

I can't stand the man myself, but I can stand hypocrisy even less.

Re: Going too far?

Are you saying double standards because it's applied to conservatives only?

Have you seen Obama hung in effigy, burnt in effigy, the "hope" poster changed to "rope"? Various references to lynchings? Michelle Obama compared to a gorilla. It cuts both ways. It's tasteless, it's rude. It's not funny. But hypocrisy? Nah, not in this case. I can't speak to Tories, not my expertise.

I'm saying it's double standards because I thought progressive types were supposed to be above this kind of thing.

One doesn't expect anything better from knuckle draggers and racists.

In my experience it's always the ones who are the loudest critics of offensive behaviour in others who gleefully indulge in the same when there's a right-winger to drag down - see my example above.

Well, truth be told, knuckle draggers exist on both sides of the spectrum. I just don't see the same double standard. However, it was an inappropriate image.

Re: Going too far?

These things have been done to almost all politicians throughout history, and I always feel a little disappointed by society.
As mentioned above, the same and worse was done to Obama---but it was disgusting then and still is.

I think the one main difference, is that this time is was done by a fairly famous, well followed celebrity--not a bunch of alt-right hicks in nowhereland.

The 'intelligent' anti-Trump crowd get's away with a lot of immature and physical based attacks on the man---many of which the same demographic would be furious if it was done to a non-white, non-male, non-conservative.

Eitherway, this situation was one step too far and I'm glad she apologized---I hope it sets a precedent that even though he's an unpopular politician, and it's really in fashion to make fun of him--we are all still human beings.

They just think they are, but they're actually worse because they are blind to the prejudices they have while being smug in their ignorance.

It is stupid to assume or even claim that everybody in a given group would do or agree with something simply because a single member has done or agrees with that something.

No it wasn't too far. It was comedy. If you can't take a joke or don't find it funny then you don't have to watch it.

Judging by this and the Mexican food thread, it's clear that you haven't had your coffee yet this morning.

You don't have the choice. By the time you realise what it is, it's in front of you.

It's way too far in my book.

It was an attempt at comedy, and it wasn't insightful, entertaining or funny. A good indication of a bad joke, is when the comedian immediately apologizes, also saying it is wrong and went too far, and begs for forgiveness.

This is all true. However it wasn't "too far" nothing is too far when it comes to comedy. I'm sick of this outrage/censorship culture that is now the norm.

Except it isn't the norm. There is no real censorship to speak of in the English speaking world.

There's plenty of social pressure on people not to be dicks, and it was rightly applied in this case.

But that isn't the same as censorship. In fact, facing consequences for breaking social taboos is a perfectly normal part of human life and always has been.

Re: Going too far?

Before he was elected, I had Trump's head in a jar as a halloween decoration, like this one:

I didn't think it was going too far, neither did anyone else. Why not? Because there's no fake blood? Not fake gory enough to be tasteless? Or because i'm not famous, it's ok to do, but unacceptable for this comedian? If it had been Halloween, would it be acceptable?

Where to draw the line?

To be honest, there is smugness and blindness on both sides. Here, as well as in the real world. Tiresome.
