Why? For telling the truth? It's council housing, a certain percentage of people living there are almost guaranteed to be collecting benefits. We know some are ayslum seekers and they're not allowed to work in the UK so how else are they supporting themselves?
The people who were living in this tower have gone through hell, watched their neighbours including very young children literally burn to death and they have lost everything.

You have written the most appalling post(s) one could imagine in this situation and you should be ashamed of yourself. You need to seriously resist the temptation to reveal your true inner self at this time.

No, because it was just an epically callous and insensitive post based mostly on prejudice and speculation. We only know of one asylum seeker (who died) and as far as I am aware there are no publicised statistics saying who was on benefits. However if it makes it easier to justify saying such things to yourself by feeling you are speaking 'the truth' then hey, knock yourself out.
And if it's make you happy to deny the possibility then go ahead.

Many have already been through hell in their own countries. Perhaps if they'd stayed and fought to make those countries better .... I'll let you fill in the rest.

Medea, your response to where to house non-indigenous people who lived in these flats, which were burned down through no fault of their own is to 'Go back home'

I would say you're trolling but I think you're far too stupid to be doing that.

Crikey, they don't even know who the enemy is, though. They are just civilians caught up in dozens of fractured militia and insurgents or coerced/frightened armed kids who might be made up of neighbours, relatives, the guy that used to be their dentist across town.

There isn't "an enemy" they can stay and fight.

No-one denied it was a "possibility", but what relevance does it have to the situation? Are you suggesting a legally entitled asylum seeker shouldn't receive aid following a tragedy and near-death experience like this, and instead we should just throw any compassion to the winds and send them right back to the Syrian warzone to, erm, 'fight'?

Seriously, when I think I have seen the most head-scratchingly weird stuff possible posted on this forum, someone once more surprises me.

He used to buy the extinguishers and blankets in bulk because none of the lettings agents in the area (Berkshire) would market his properties without them.
I've let three small properties in Berkshire, for the last 15 years and I've never been asked by a rental agency to ensure there are fire extinguishers or fire blankets in any of them.

You are describing fire safety requirements for HMOs, which are substantially more regulated than for all private landlords.

I am not saying it makes no sense for any landlord to supply a fire extinguisher and / or fire blanket that is suitable for a kitchen.

If a fire extinguisher is provided, the landlord is also responsible for ensuring it is inspected every 12 months so they are not held accountable for any faults in equipment they have installed.

So your 'truth' has rapidly been downgraded to a 'possibility'.

I'm stunned that you can leap to this assumption based upon the few actual facts that we currently know. Did you base it upon the student of civil engineering at the University of West London who died, or the talented, young artist whose work is currently being exhibited in Venice, who also died?

Why not? That's standard practice for anyone who's homeless and yes they may be stuck in an hotel for weeks or even months. But why should they get "better" treatment than anyone else who's made homeless?

And although everyone will moan at me, how about if some of them go back to their home countries? I doubt they're all refugees or asylum seekers. But I expect many have been happily collecting benefit money from the UK.
I may disagree with your opinions, however I will defend your right to make an ass of yourself while expressing them.

Your version of reality is not mine.

Praise for emergency services may well yet be premature. There's witness reports saying that residents were advised to stay in their rooms by emergency services. Had they been told to evacuate at the outset then more lives may have been saved.

Well they were following standard procedures, as evidenced by the massive sign at the entrance of the building. Had the fire not spread and people burned alive or trampled in the stairwells they would have been similarly blamed. Its a very difficult one.

This type of advice is based on scenarios that have been rehearsed and practiced beforehand. These in turn are based on analysis also taking into account the dynamics of a situation and probabilities. Sometimes unpredictable events can go the other way and what would generally be the best course of action may in hindsight actually turn out to the worst. Maybe such scenarios need to be reconsidered, but it would be extremely unfair to blame individual firefighters for following the procedures they were trained to follow.

This is true. I still wouldn't rule out the possibility of rescue protocols having failed in this instance.

I also have a slight problem with all the praise being lavished on the fire service. They're only doing their job at the end of the day, which remember 95% of the time involves sitting around eating fast food, playing Connect Four and watching hardcore pornography.

OK, so they know what they are getting into when they join the fire service but, pissin' hell Loz, if you are the one running AGAINST all the panicked people into the bowels of hell like they were the other night in the vain hope you might pull out someone's family member, that takes balls and should be recognised.

Knowingly putting yourself in a position where you might lose your life to save others NOT "just doing your job at the end of the day".

The cynicism on here is eye-watering sometimes.

No it bloody doesn't. While 95% of their time maybe spent not fighting fires, that time is used for drills, on going training, maintenance and regular checks on equipment to make sure everything is is in full working order. Not to mention physical training as well.

And fitting £12 fire alarms for £80, rescuing cats and providing the entertainment for any hen night passing through town.

Two days and two nights on followed by four days off. That latter enables you to take up a second job. Decent work if you can get it.

Have you ever tried running up stairs with the oxygen packs and all the gear they have? Did you ever go into a building on fire? Did you try and help cutting a car open on the motorway whilst you can see the person bleeding to death?

I don´t think it´s an easy peasy job
