Everybody can take up a second job and work nights and weekends. What was your point again?

I can imagine that for jobs such as that of a fireman there may be severe restrictions on your ability to take a second job. They want you to turn up for work fully rested.

Having said that, I know an ex-fireman from Austria who had a serious accident at work when he was in his late 30ies. They put him into a back office job after that but it was rationalized away after only a few years or so and they decided to send him home at more or less his full salary. He then opened a bed and breakfast.

Medea - I still can't get my head, nor my heart or brain, around THAT post

how do you know some of the residents are not nurses, teachers, carers, shopkeepers, etc, etc? How do you know that most of them were not born in Britain, 2nd, 3rd, and more generations? What about their children and babies?

Signing off from EF - just too much to bear at the moment- thinking about those poor people, whatever nationality, ethnicity, religion, shade or colour, job or not - is overwhelming. But your comment was sick beyond contempt.

And although everyone will moan at me, how about if some of them go back to their home countries? I doubt they're all refugees or asylum seekers. But I expect many have been happily collecting benefit money from the UK.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...italian-woman/

"I had my whole life ahead of me - I don't want to die': Final call of Italian woman trapped in blaze revealed.

A young, talented Italian woman telephoned her mother to say her goodbyes as her flat was engulfed in the Grenfell Tower blaze.

Marco Gottardi and his girlfriend Gloria Trevisan, both architects from the Veneto region of northern Italy, are missing and feared dead by their families."

Both graduated and employed architects.
Whats your level of qualification in life ? are you attaining this level achievement, educationally, financially and morally ? if not, f-u-c-k off back to wherever you came from and leave us to have a slightly better switzerland without you.

No it bloody doesn't. While 95% of their time maybe spent not fighting fires, that time is used for drills, on going training, maintenance and regular checks on equipment to make sure everything is is in full working order. Not to mention physical training as well.
And the traffic accidents they attend to cut victims out of the wreckage. The support and care they will provide in situations too numerous to list. Over 350 firefighters attended the blaze. I imagine very many of them are still there despite it being their roster-ed days off.

Firefighters, by definition, are heroes if you ask me. It's appalling that anyone should type otherwise.

Keep your vitriolic nonsense to yourself please Loz, Medea. It's disgusting. Life as they knew it has ended for hundreds of people whose starting resources were probably far more limited than we'll ever realise. Than we'll hopefully ever experience.

I've just watched the BBC news where a family friend of the first named victim was saying that he was studying Civil Engineering so that he could go back to Syria one day and rebuild his country. He wasn't here for f&ucking handouts.

Roegner, my apologies. I hadn't seen your post before I typed this.

As for the suggestion that firefighters have it easy.... Loz, you're tapped. How many jobs do you have? How many hours do you work a week?

Yuck.

I'm stunned that you can leap to this assumption based upon the few actual facts that we currently know. Did you base it upon the student of civil engineering at the University of West London who died, or the talented, young artist whose work is currently being exhibited in Venice, who also died?
Also a couple of Italian architecture graduates:
Thank you, mum: Trapped couple's heart-rending final phone calls home to their parents as fire crept into their flat on the 23rd floor

No indication if there's any family connection, but an Italian father is interviewed here saying his missing daughter had just got a good job:
Fearless firefighters scale Grenfell Tower as they scour for bodies of victims on the top floors where 'no one survived'

This thread seems to have proved, sadly, that a person's origins and financial worth can actually reduce sympathy for them. Pretty awful.

That would probably explain why it's one of the most oversubscribed jobs in the country.

And if it's make you happy to deny the possibility then go ahead.

Many have already been through hell in their own countries. Perhaps if they'd stayed and fought to make those countries better .... I'll let you fill in the rest.
I alway's thought you harsh, now I just think you are a cold hearted cow. Perhaps the current government in your home country would suit your personality better.

I seemed to miss all of the fun, rather humorous however that the same lads who were playing down a lot of the nonsense over the past 18 months "until we know who did this" are ironically looking for blood before the cause of the fire is known.

I do not at all like where this train of thought is heading.

Is the death of a brilliant architect more tragic than the death of an unemployed layabout?

What does it matter how brilliant the individuals were. Any death is equally tragic.

I think it's an attempt at counterbalancing the awfulness of a couple of other posts I do not have within me to paraphrase.

You're right though, of course.
