57 Dead in Portugese Forest Fire

Can't seem to get away from fire related deaths at the moment.

Terrible tragedy in Portugal and death toll is expected to rise.

So terrible.

Seems that when the fire started (due to a lightning strike), the fire spread and grew so quicky that the people ran away from their homes when then the worst happened.

Death toll up to 62 now, but some people managed to save themselves by climbing into a water tank.

Re: 57 Dead in Portugese Forest Fire

Such a tragedy. There was a bad fire in West Australia two years ago. I was driving home and just got through before the road was closed. It was massive and whole towns were fleeing from it's front. I had friends dotted around in various towns, who also had family and livestock. It was a really stressful time. There were only a couple of people killed, that more didn't die is just sheer luck.

It is horrible news that so many perished, and incredible how many actually survived as well. Deaths in large numbers seem to be around us lately, and yet, for me at least, accidental death due to an act of god (nature) somehow makes it just a part of life, sad for sure but different to deaths caused by human causes.

Sometimes it would really help to read what's linked. The first paragraph reads:

"Reports that a firefighting plane crashed during an operation to tackle huge blazes in central Portugal have been denied by the country's civil protection authority."

That was updated. Before there was actually an indication that a Canadair crashed

Correct. When I posted the link at 10 to 8 last night there was nothing to say the report was being denied.

Ok. Poor policy by the BBC to not show an article's been edited/updated after publication.

Re: 57 Dead in Portugese Forest Fire

Portugal is by percentage, the most heavily forested country in Europe, and it has failings,

1. most of the forest is created frpm small privately owned parcels of land

2. there is seldom a gap between the forest and the road, so falling trees will block the road

3. the scrub growing on the ground is seldom cleared away, creating a fire risk

4. there are seldom fire breaks, the forest is growing right next to homes

5. communication is poor for the fire fighters: they were helpless when their radio tower burnt down

6. Eucalyptus trees have been planted, which are very combustible

7. there is no national warning system, the fire fighters spend much time rescuing people, when they could be fighting fires
