Barry Norman RIP

Barry Norman has passed away aged 83.

Sad news for me personally as I worked with him on Radio 4's motoring programme "Going Places" for many years.

Re: Barry Norman RIP

As a kid I remember sometimes sneaking to the top of the stairs when I was supposed to be in bed to watch "Film 80(something)" which my parents had on the telly. Always loved his no-nonsense critique of the new releases.

Barry Norman, possibly the worlds finest film critic, RIP

Sadly yes.

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40468411

I didn‘t always agree with him, but that‘s what made him IMO the worlds finest film critic. It didn‘t matter to me whether he raved about a film, or slated it, it was the way in which he did both of those things that enabled me to make a choice about a film.

The way he dissected a film gave me the information as to whether a film would be a good or bad fit for me. His final opinion was simply that of his, and while he never said so to my knowledge, I think that would be obvious to anybody who followed his reviews.

And that, in my opinion, is what makes a great critic.

RIP Barry.

He was indeed. What got me was that the Daily Mail - who he actually wrote for at times - announced his death with a photo of Barry CRYER.

Bollocks - the BBC Article was only posted 1 hour prior to me posting this. Then again I‘m not around here much anymore.

Sorry, but wrong. If you look I posted that thread at 14.40 this afternoon which was just after I saw the article. The article has been updated with more tributes than in the original which is why the time on the Beeb site has changed.

How petty can you get? Fighting about having posted someone's death first?!
I didn't know about the guy, still, may he rest in peace. (Wonder if he enjoyed working with you .... as that bit was probably the main thing you wanted to be known )

Funny how nowadays everyone can name their favourite representative of a profession (name the profession, but usually it's about art or sports) as the world's best at that profession.

RIP to the guy. I didn't know of him and now I can continue my sad life without having read his articles.

We're all the centre of our own world. There are probably some excellent film critics writing in Russian or Hindi or Arabic, reviewing films made in Nigeria or China or Peru, but an Englishman is hardly likely to consider any of them the best in his own world, any more than a citizen of Kazakhstan is likely to consider Barry Norman the best critic in his world.

Let those who enjoyed his television programmes mourn for their star. The rest of us will have our own reminders of old age and inevitable death in due course.

Re: Barry Norman, possibly the worlds finest film critic, RIP

Wasn't he the only film critic on U.K. TV in the 1980s?

I'd be hard-pressed to name another.

Perhaps the thread would have been better titled:

Barry Norman, possibly the worlds only film critic who I have actually heard off, RIP
