Never been to Vegas, must check that out.
Friend, you really must. I have been there three times in not quite two years and each time I find something new to do. If you enjoy nature or driving, I recommend exploring the area outside Las Vegas by car. The second trip I took a Corvette convertible out to the desert, on the third I took a Pontiac convertible up to Zion National Park in Utah and back. The scenery is spectacular, I took hundreds of pictures.

Absolutely. I've always wanted to see the Hoover Dam too. So must definitely go there.

I was too, today it is obnoxious bars and strip clubs (which suck btw). I was told because of Katrina the previous bar and restaurant owners were ruined and the street was rebuilt by corporations. There is also a heavy police presence at all times on and near Bourbon Street, uniformed local and state police in marked cars. This probably cuts down on the wild antics of the past.

yeah, sounds about right.

Yes it is impressive but don't forget the Grand Canyon. The is "Grand Canyon" (Literally Grand Canyon West) which is about two hours outside of Vegas but this is not the one you have seen in film or literature. The South Rim is the one to see but it is about five hour's drive. I didn't have enough mileage allowance on my car so we did GCW. If you had to see a big canyon and didn't have time for South Rim try it, but I thought it wasn't worth the money.

On another note...ugly is a relative term. Social realism was a big fan of concrete. Beton. There are other places that share the same idolation.
Noticed they started to cosmeticise a bit by redoing the facades, those degraded the most, not the structure of the buildings. Funny, they're made to last.

Ironic that they are quoting a white supremacist who owned more than 175 slaves, and never granted any of them freedom...
I think there are a few distinctions that need to be made, though.

There are many famous buildings that were built using slave labor - the White House included. These aren't monuments to celebrate the history of slavery and shouldn't be demolished as if they never existed. They remind us of how far we've come.

The statues honoring Lee and Jackson that have been mentioned are (mostly) for their contribution to the Confederacy - a country that broke away with the specific intent to preserve slavery. Lee did serve the USA honorably before the Civil War, so one could argue about that. There's a building at West Point named for him, not for his Confederate actions but for his overall military genius.

There are statues of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln too of course. The former two were slave owners and arguably all of them believed blacks were inferior. So you can argue that many prominent people had slaves and believed blacks were the inferior race - but not all of them fought to preserve the institution of slavery.

I'm a descended from one of the above mentioned statue dudes, and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. While I don't think they should be celebrated for trying to preserve slavery, they were important figures in Confederate and U.S. history and future generations should know who they were and what they stood for. Maybe a hero-style bronze statue on a marble platform isn't the best way to do that though.

Then again, there are loads of other places and objects that commemorate Lee alone, do you then rename all of them/take all the statutes down? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._Robert_E._Lee

There are other memorials/honors for other Confederate figures too. What's the best way to handle those? https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...d8a_story.html

And how did we make the leap from memorials celebrating the fight to keep slavery to then say that anything related to blacks (jazz?) should disappear? Really??

Vegas is fun - especially the bufet in Ceasar's, wow. The best food I have eaten. Ever. Reno is not bad either, so much more kid friendly, Circus Circus-y

I did the famous drive Vegas - NPs, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon..The best were those less popular parks, though, I have to say. Not because a lot of the nature is disneyfied - instead of "come here and take a selfie with Mickey" you get "come here and take a selfie with this old tree". It feels like a lof of the visitors need to have nature interpreted, which is very uneuropean. On the other hand, the smaller parks are really much worthier, fewer tourists, good program for kids, rangers to talk to, not so many crowds to run away from. So, I really liked Antelope Canyon, Horse-shoe bent, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Great Basin, Death Valey. Yosemite was probably the nicest...albeit packed. Tahoe, Napa and Grand Teton were pretty amazing, too, low key. I enjoyed Yellowstone, one has to see it. But it feels like it gets hurt by so many visitors. Shenandoah, Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smokies were spectacular too, so...European, familiar and mellow. I do want to see them all. More I see parks, though, more I wish to do backcountry camping and trekking, instead. Or just stay on a ranch somewhere in Montana or Wyoming, get away from populated places. Nature in the US is spectacular...far away from politics and annoyances. Former students of mine jut got back from Hawai, that place is tempting me too.

I think there aren't enough resources to rebuild from scratch, so they just have to last. Repaired, more or less discretely. My mick-macked soc-real school is still standing, surprisingly. My kid loves taking classes there, and lunches in the canteen (not different than mine at her age), and gym classes with kids her age, when we are over. I dislike soc-real. Heavy. Though the humanist theme statues - a couple kissing (no, not Brezhnyev et al), or family running, partisans, older people walking, etc. are still standing there in the parks and public squares. I just saw a statue in a park honoring the victims of communism, it was a sad and bleak girl-woman. I think it is meant to be that way, the worst life was for those, who were left abandoned after the victims got killed, tortured, or disapeared. Or sterilized.

Excellent post! I am glad you still have the energy to provide an educated perspective based on knowledge and understanding of U.S. history. I am too busy/tired today, in EF read-only mode, almost

I like the thread drift though - Vegas vs Nawleans. Both for different reasons.

New Orleans for music and home-cooked food, but far, far away from Bourbon street and the like. I spend a bit of time there every few weeks/months, it's my "hiding place" away from home, now that "my place" in California is too far for a 2-3 day trip. I like to look at antique shops and small bookstores, small bars with live music, and hang out with my local friends. If I am really, really DONE with the world, I usually drive out to the swampland for a few days and try to interact in "funny French". There is always someone who pulls out an accordion and indulges me with Zydeco. I love the area.

Vegas is fun for shows, world-class shopping (but does not have the creative vibe of Los Angeles), interesting food options, and of course flying over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter. I am not really a "nature" person, unless it's by the sea, so I never felt the urge to hop out of that helicopter and walk around the GC.
You could say Vegas is a small sample of America, but not always the best sample I am afraid. I am not a gambling woman but like the spas there.

Because this is what is being directed by politicians across the country right now:

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer (D) directed the Louisville Commission on Public Art to develop a list of works that “can be interpreted to be honoring bigotry, racism and/or slavery,”

Emphasis mine. I agree to a certain extent but I begin to wonder if the U.S. is losing its collective mind. There is a difference between honoring the institution of slavery vs. honoring those that were enslaved, and how they survived it and created traditions worth continuing.

Ooh, you should come and visit Switzerland. We have something like that: the Matterhorn. Only it's an inverted canyon. Instead of a whole lotta nuthin', you get a huge mountain. Actually, we have lots just like it here.

What does your vacation in Vegas have to do with Nazis in Charlottesville (or Illinois)?

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like: "I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive." Suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car...

the dumb thing is that it wont stop there. after the people with 0% melanin (nobody btw) are gone, they are gonna move on to people with whatever is the least amount of melanin and call them "white" or make up some other scary term.

black+white=brown
brown+white=lightbrown
lightbrown+white=verylightbrown
verylightbrown+white=basically white
rinse and repeat. so retarded.

the only way it would work for them is mass rape or at least abandon monogamy which im sure is gonna sit well with all those white women.
