| | Barcelona: Van rams into crowd
Yet another attack.
"A van has ploughed into crowds in Barcelona's Las Ramblas tourist area.
Police are reporting that people were killed in the "massive crash", and emergency services are urging people to stay away from the Plaça de Catalunya.
People took cover in nearby shops and cafes, while emergency services have requested the closure of local metro and train stations.
El Pais newspaper said the driver of the vehicle had fled on foot after mowing down dozens of people.
Other media reports say police are treating the incident as a terror attack, and that one or two armed men have now barricaded themselves inside a bar in the area." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40965581 | This user would like to thank Medea Fleecestealer for this useful post: | |

Why is Spain a target? They don't bomb ISIS, do they?

How long before all major EU city centres are pedestrianised? Otherwise, I dont see how they can stop the new craze of using vehicles to commit atrocities.

And if the centre of towns all really would be "safe", they just pick a random target like a pre-school in some small town, an unloading tourist bus in Davos etc.. truth is, there's nothing to prevent this from happening, we can only reduce the attacks by taking out as many people who are willing to do so out of society, but how far do we want to go?

Terrorists generally go for large crowds to cause maximum carnage, thats why city centres are a big target. A school in a small town is something else entirely and cant even be logically compared.
Pedestrianising tourist areas doesnt magically make everyone safe from every attack, but it cuts down on the potential vehicle attacks and that would be significant.

Support among certain groups for these deeds is already way to high, but there's a lot of potential support left for them to gain. Look at certain people dancing in the streets after some attacks.
What they want is us against them, and at the moment they are winning since society gets more and more divided (which has more causes than only terrorism)
They will always seek a target, for now it is mostly city centers which makes people outside towns feel relatively safe, but people gather at so many places, every school is a place where lots of people gather and the impact of a school with 100 children even in the middle of nowhere would be so much bigger than what happened today.
A terrorist will not stop when we take one possible target away, he will just find another target.

This time they've arrested them, so maybe they can get to a network or cell. But there again they're probably known to authorities
Nothing more was ever said about the Paris attacker arrested in Belgium or is it still pending process

Main suspect:
Driss Oukabir, a Morrocan who had arrived in Spain in July, coming from Marseille.
'Según informa Clarín, hace dos años en esta red social respondía a una pregunta de un internauta a la cuestión: "En tu primer día como rey/reina absoluta del mundo, ¿qué harías?". Oukabir contestó: "Matar a los infieles y sólo dejar musulmanes que sigan la religión".'
..'two years ago on this social network he responded to the question: 'On your first day as absolute king of the world, what would you do?' Oukabir answered:
' Kill the infidels and only leave the Muslims that advance the religion..' http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/3114...ado-barcelona/

It kind of generalizes to how can we keep large amounts of kinetic energy out of the hands of terrorists. Self-driving vehicles may form part of the solution. Whatever it is, expect more top-down control.
In the end, we may be doomed. There are always going to be crazies getting their hands on ever-more potent technologies.
