'harmless' radioactive cloud over Europe

Nuclear accident sends 'harmless' radioactive cloud over Europe

A cloud of radioactive pollution over Europe in recent weeks indicates that an accident happened in a nuclear facility in Russia or Kazakhstan in the last week of September, the French nuclear safety institute IRSN has said.

If an accident of this magnitude had happened in France it would have required the evacuation or sheltering of people in a radius of several kilometres around the accident site.

Is it time to break out the iodine tabs yet?

No.

This was a leak of Ruthenium-106. Iodine tablets are mainly good for protecting against radioactive Iodine. Hence the name.

"There has been no impact on human health or the environment in Europe"
" Seven German stations recorded levels from a few microbecquerels to five millibecquerels per cubic metre of air, posing no hazard to health."

To give some kind of context, on average, a cubic metre of air contains between 5-15 becquerels of naturally occurring Radon gas.

Re: 'harmless' radioactive cloud over Europe

From the link:
<<“Russian authorities have said they are not aware of an accident on their territory,”...........
A spokeswoman for the Russian emergencies ministry said she could not immediately comment. It was not immediately possible to reach authorities in Kazakhstan or the Kazakh embassy in Moscow.>>

Oh dear

I never got any but incidentally I just heard two weeks ago that a friend of mine - who lives in Zug - got them in his cupboard still.

I'll go for the beer instead, if at all I'll rather die tipsy

Re: 'harmless' radioactive cloud over Europe

Isn't this incident No. 3 this year?

January Iodine-131

September Ruthenium-106

Edit: Oh yours is regarding the September incident. Old news then. Do you read The Local
The Germans already blamed Russia over a month ago.

More like back to the beginning of apple, or bitcoin, methinks.

If you could time travel you'd just go back to this afternoon and buy fondue bread, right?

Ja, but you only get five millibecquerels worth of travel back in time, making you appear a bit slower. Dunno if this is so super.

Just don't go back and edit any of your posts, you'll mess up the whole time continuum thing.

How far removed would you be if you were five millibecquerels back from everyone else? Movement of the Earth through space etc? Would you still be standing in the same spot?

Are you talking to yourself?

If I get that right, becquerel are not about movement but about decay
So what exactly is the question? How much later than anybody else you will vaporize into dust?

The answer would be 1 mili-s−1 (the -1 should be optically raised)

Could it be the N. Koreans? They're right next door to the Russians!

Unlikely.

Look at the map here

Also consider the fact that at the moment anyone at a monitoring facility who notices a blip in the data will first check if it's from the NK area, and second cross check with other institutes to see if they're seeing the same blip.
