Saint Martin, is that a loaf in your hand?

How NOT to create a statue of Saint Martin.

Re: Saint Martin, is that a loaf in your hand?

Years ago, I read the story of St.Martin to my little students. Especially the boys were fascinated, because Martin had been a proud roman officer with horse and sword before he became a christian. We made cardboard swords so they could fight like roman soldiers. Then we went to see the statue - the kids loved it, especially the golden sword an how he was man enough to share his mantle with a beggar.

But then, parents came to see me and asked if we had visited a man called Martin because the kids talked a lot about him, and he had a horse and a sword and he would cut jackets! And wouldn't that be dangerous?

Poor St.Martin, can't make it right!
