It is easy to say that ethic hate was at the root of all this, but I don't think that things were that simple. Yes, there were ethnic differences and tensions, but these would not have exploded as much as they did if it weren't for politicians and power groups that deliberately inflamed even the most minute of ethnic issue to get themselves into the top of the scene. The war truly started when propaganda started flooding the TV screens seeding the hate in people's minds. I don't think regular yugoslav people "hated each other's guts" - they were driven to hate each other, particularly by a certain class of politicians descending from the highly corrupt and rather ruthless communist hierarchy established by Tito.

It's those politicians that drove that propaganda and the political agenda that should have been in the tribunal boxes as much as the military leaders we saw lately. Once the war is started the outcome is pretty much the same: war crimes and war criminals on all sides
First time I was in Yugoslavia was in 1976, of course you got talking to the locals who wanted to know from where you come from and how you like their country, the usual friendly native stuff. But what burned into my mind even them was the hate towards "the others" in this case it was directed against the muslims, this was not stirred up by recent propaganda, the propaganda was just a vector for the real problems.

It's obvious there were ethnical tensions, probably even hate. It's one thing to talk crap about the others (see comments on DM btw) and the next day go about your life, go to work, come back, have dinner, drink your beer, and totally different to act on those feelings, and this thing happen only when there is a "proper" political climate. Yugoslavia, coming out of communism, didn't have any experience with toning down inter-ethnical tensions.

I don't know if that's a valid point or not. Yes it's what everybody and their dog says, yet clearly such an issue isn't necessary in all cases. Just consider the UK/Brexit, apparently it forced even families to not discuss politics for an extended period of time. Or the current situation in the US. Much of western Europe faces a similar divide.

Perhaps it's much more a general climate of discontent (usually due to a poor economic situation) coupled with a lack of hope for improvenemt, a lack of a light at the end of the tunnel. Add people who point the finger at a certain group to the mix and the situation may literally explode.

You have just explained why every "Empire, Realm or Reich" has gone down the crapper since our species started banging the rocks.
