Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan

The racist card in America carries a lot of weight. Simply speculating about a child's skin colour is considered blatant racism, no matter the motivation behind it.

I hope one day we can talk about skin colour in the same manner as hair colour.

I think you‘ll find the colour speculation was whether the child would be ginger.

...and where did Harry pick up his ginger??

Lots of people screaming that the Royal family’s treatment of Meghan is racist, whilst also screaming that she was treated exactly the same as her white mother in law Diana
I think a more interesting comparison would be Wallis Simpson, another American actress who thought being a British royal would be fun, made a few mistakes, and ended up being hated by much of the public.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, the Queen's representative in London, personally appointed by her, summed it up quite nicely on the radio tonight.

He said context and intent were the key things to consider.

Yes, the remark could have been made in a sneering way with racist overtones or it could have been, as you suggested, as harmless as asking about hair colour.

Indeed, his own mother in law made exactly the same comment when asking him and his wife about her future grandchild. It turned out she wanted to know what colour knitting wool she ought to buy to buy to knit the baby some baby clothes.

Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan

A personal anecdote here: Back in the day, we lived in Fulham and joined the Harbour Club in the early 90s.

Princess Diana was also a member. I used to do the school run and then head to the club and do a run on the treadmill. Many times (in 1993/1994), Diana would also arrive around the same time surrounded by a bevy of press.

She showed up in leotards, full makeup and hair perfectly coiffed and proceeded to the gym where I also went and I swear she barely did anything. Maybe lifted a 2 kg weight or so; but she looked pretty amazing (as I sweated and slogged away on the treadmill...lol!). At the time she was separated from Charles and rumored to be having a dalliance with Will Carling (also a member and quite handsome at that time I must say!). He was the captain of the English National Rugby team.

My impression back then was, as a recently separated woman, she courted/played the press as much as they hounded her. I don't view Diana as a victim entirely in the 90s at least (although she should have had more support when she first married Charles in the "early days" perhaps). But surely, Harry sees his mother as a victim: at the hands of the monarchy, the "firm", the press et al... And that narrative, that his mother was a victim and now his wife is victimized, continues.

Family history reliving itself - sad but true.

Well, according to my British sources (lol ), Harry picked up his "ginger" from James Hewitt with whom Diana had a dalliance/affair before her separation.

Two things- first, I think there are different ways of asking what the kid will look like. There’s the excited - ooh, who do you think he’ll resemble? Innocent curiosity. And then there’s the - so how dark is this kid going to be, which sounds a bit more nefarious, and yes, smidgen away from - he’s not going to be too dark, is he? Clearly, none of us were there so who knows. Smells racist to me but whatever.
My mother asked the same question and said more or less the same thing about my mixed raced daughter. How dark is she going to be, she's not going to be too dark is she? The context - she's worried because we live in a country where my daughter may face racism. Does this make my mother a racist?

Yes of course this depends on the context. But I can imagine that everyone has a racist uncle or cousin, and we don't let them tar the whole family. By not identifying the person, she has done just that.

Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan

I was interested in the post about Diana being a member of The Harbour Club, because I remember photos taken of her having a "private workout" being "leaked" to The Sun. She was on a bench press or something lying on her back and was indeed perfectly coiffed and made up. Representatives said there must have been a small hole in the ceiling and someone with a hidden camera, then it came out someone had been paid and Diana had a hand in it.

As for the desperate pair of grifters on Oprah, I think Harry is being played like a fiddle by a wife and MiL who know how to push his emotional buttons. His MiL was a nobody until they got married, yet now they say she shops in designer stores and teaches Oprah yoga. For that matter who on earth had heard of MM? I took German classes with 3 Canadian ladies who had never heard of neither her nor Suits on TV.

Another thing that's never been answered properly - why was Megan living with her pa for a few years if she has such a great relationship with her ma?

Diana was definitely a member of The Harbour Club. I saw her many times but as is customary in the UK, one never approaches a celebrity or public figure unless they approach you.

MM was a B+ celebrity as Suits was quite a popular TV series in the US. That said, her name/star appeal has risen and then some since she married Harry.

Just saw some bits of Oprah being interviewed in the morning show. I thought she was Meghan's long time friend, but Oprah said they only got to know each other just before the wedding, or something like that.

"Diana was definitely a member of The Harbour Club. I saw her many times but as is customary in the UK, one never approaches a celebrity or public figure unless they approach you".

In the mid to late 90s I worked for 2 charitable arts societies in London that had Royal Charter status, The Queen was the Patron and Prince Charles an Honourable Member. I occasionally dealt with offices at the Palace and if you met the senior Royals (in my case Charles) you were instructed not to speak to them unless they spoke to you. My dealings with the Palace were mainly to do with when a new member of either society was elected - they were given a charter that had to be signed by the Queen, so they had to be delivered to the Palace by hand (you just left them with the policeman on duty at the gate).

I also went to a garden party as part of a role I had with another charity, it was fascinating to watch how the Queen handles the people she is introduced to.

I don't think it's nearly as stuffy with the younger ones, Wills and Kate for example.

Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan

Its a potentially very damaging situation for the Royal Family, who have so far remained silent. I think being stuffy and upper class is one thing. Being racist and ignorant of suicidal people is quite another. The fall out for the royals goes a long way beyond just a couple of bumps in the road.

The stakes are pretty high. Someone isn't telling the truth and if its queenie and her gang, they face a possibly permanent slur on their institution which will affect them both reputationally and also probably fairly significantly in terms of their brand value. If Megs and Harry turn out they made it up, then they are both goosed and it does huge damage to people who really do suffer from race discrimination or significant depression.

I can honestly say I've no idea which side is making it up. you just cant tell.

Would your mother treat your child differently depending on her skin tone? That might be the difference.
