| | Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan | Quote: | | | | | One of the worst things about this topic splashed around the internet at the moment is that she is "black" and Whitey McWhitewite from Whitington in Whitenhampshire won´t like that one little bit. If you think that the Americans ripping into a "black" president was bad wait until you get the generic English redneck chav on about a "black" royal. | | | | | To be fair the UK is still one of the most multi-cultural places in the world and mixed race relationships are very common vs anywhere else I can think of.
It is more the aristocrats royal circle rather than the common Brit who would be outraged about who is marrying into the royal family... most normal people couldn't give a crap. In fact, I would say far more people will be bothered by her being American than by her being mixed race.

She is also fairly liberal, which has also upset the likes of the Mail and Express and their commentardiat. For instance the lovely Brendan O'Neill has got a bit triggered in the Spectator:

| | Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan | Quote: | | | | | Which is still bloody ridiculous.
It's a bit like saying "Oh, I'm Saxon-English on my mother's side, and Danish-English and Brythonic-English with a touch of Arab-English on my father's side" | | | | | Why is it ridiculous ? It can actually get a lot more complicated with that - and it's great (although, yes, you don't actually advertise it and shout it to all and sundry from the rooftops . Those DNA tests show up amazing results- and are very popular- as many people that it is important to understand your roots and where you come from. In our grand-daughter's case, it certainly helped solve a health problem with seemed 'impossible' for the medical side- with a British- Irish dad and a British-Swiss mum (until she told the grand-daughter's great-great grandmother was Indonesian (Cape Malay).
But wow- an American divorcee, not Baptized and not Anglican - déjà vu but very different attitudes (good)
As an aside, I love THAT video 'where do you REALLY come from' never asked to 'Euro Americans' but to anyone else. And Whoopy saying in her book 'call me an arsewhole- but do not ever call me 'African American'. https://youtu.be/DWynJkN5HbQ

btw- when does 'mixed race' begin and stop? When it 'shows' - in our family, many mixed race relatives do 'show' and many do not! And some of our younger family members barely know about it, and perhaps not at all- because they, or their parents, would rather leave it all behind and forget ...

| | Re: [Prince] Harry and Meghan | Quote: | | | | btw- when does 'mixed race' begin and stop? | | | | | When it's so far down the family tree that the current generation are no longer aware of it.
One of my mates has a Ghanian mother and British dad. His daughter has light blonde hair, blue eyes and looks Scandanavian, but she's very close to her Ghanian grandmother, so she's aware and proud of her ancestry.
Then there's another close friend who I spent the evening with last week, who's being advised by his doctor to "ask a few pointed questions about his ancestry, and/or consider a DNA test." Reason is that he's recently developed two minor conditions that are predominently only seen in people of African descent. As the family questions have revealed nothing, I fully expect him to be curious enough to get a DNA test.

Indeed- the case in our family. That was particularly poignant and relevant in Apartheid SA, for sure. The side of our family that emigrated to the UK are all white- our girls and their cousins all having that mildly exotic glow- but their Britishness never ever questionned.
Blueangel - interesting point re being so far down the line it becomes lost and forgotten. But how does it? In parts of my family, it will be very fast, as parents have decided to totally bury the past ancestry and have decided not to have any contact with the past (which is actually very much very present- but far away to be ignored) - for others, like our children and grandchilddren - it will hopefully never happen - as we talk about it, show photos and books, articles, studies, and as we have chosen to have contact with those who live a long way away and are 'different' from us in so many ways. It is a choice.

It was quite refreshing when I last visited (from Malta, which is somewhat racist to anyone who doesn't look like Omid Djalili)

" Tribal membership
To receive tribal services, a Native American must be a certified (or enrolled) member of a federally recognized tribal organization. Each tribal government makes its own rules for eligibility of citizens or tribal members. Among tribes, qualification for enrollment may be based upon a required percentage of Native American "blood" (or the "blood quantum") of an individual seeking recognition, or documented descent from an ancestor on the Dawes Rolls or other registers. But, the federal government has its own standards related to who qualifies for services available to certified Native Americans. For instance, federal scholarships for Native Americans require the student both to be enrolled in a federally recognized tribe and to be of at least one-quarter Native American descent (equivalent to one grandparent), attested to by a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card issued by the federal government." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native...s#21st_century
Some of the tribes go right down to 1/32nd. | This user would like to thank Medea Fleecestealer for this useful post: | |

If you delve into genealogy, the secrets and lies all come tumbling out, like my great great grandmother. She was a proper rum bugger She was a a widowed, 42yr old owner of a mineral water bottling factory when she met a 23yr old German Jewish lad who was the heir to a ginger beer factory, at a bottled pop convention in Manchester (how utterly glamourous). She married him when she was 6mths pregnant with my great grandmother. That family secret was very well buried.
When you look at the history of Moors in Spain, Italy and Greece, then consider Shakespearean references and paintings of that era, you realise that there were quite a number of non-white people in the UK. One of my black mates at college could trace his ancestry in the UK back to the 1720's, which is a hell of a lot further back than most of my lot. But no matter how the genetics is watered down over the generations, there's always the chance of, what used to be known as, 'a genetic throwback'. There were quite a few cases in S.A. of kids being adopted out because they were "too dark skinned" to fit in with the rest of their family. There's even been cases of biracial twins.
Genetics is a wonderful and fascinating thing that's full of surprises.

Ditto. My family would have you believe we're Brits & Scots through and through. But my brother's skin color and nose shape is totally wrong. When I raised it as a kid with a great grandmother, the rest of the family were too quick to shush me and herd me out of the room.....only years later did I find out someone had been very naughty out of wedlock, and despite the options for dilution over generations, my brother is the living throwback proof.
