Obama's presidential portrait.

The official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama have been revealed.

Whereas all past presidents have been portraited, I don't recall past unveilings having caused very much in the way of ripples outside of the world of museum-philes.

So, what's up? Why the fuss? Do these pictures deserve the acclaim they have been receiving? Are they masterpieces or are they not?

Or is this not about the portraits at all but about the Obamas themselves?

What do our art critics have to say?

Re: Obama's presidential portrait.

His hands are too large.. is that deliberate? A dig at Donald small hands perhaps

Michelle's face is too bland.. she has a stronger character than that. Where's the twinkle in her eye and the raised eyebrow?

Yes. I agree that Michelle looks too young and too generic.

I also think her arms are too long.

Just had a better look. She is rather bland and indistinct, not overly keen on the painting's washed out colour tones either.. her character is stronger than that.

However, I do like his painting. He has a great face, striking, and the painting captures him perfectly.. despite the slightly large hands

Re: Obama's presidential portrait.

Michelle looks unsure, possibly even intimidated. Not at all what she comes across like in live photos.

And she's a much better looking woman that the portrait indicates.

Barack's portrait is _close_. Not sure what all the bloody flowers are about.

A nod to the naturally regal Obama, I reckon. I like the background.

It's not washed out. The person who took the photo used a flash which, because of a oil painting's rough surface, means the flash reflects off the varnish all over the place making it appear lighter (or washed-out).

Much better images but massive too:

The female one is not of Michelle but one of the daughters, LOL. She probably didn't have time to sit for it.

Re: Obama's presidential portrait.

I read something earlier in the week that the flowers are native to Chicago, Hawaii and Africa to symbolize where he is from, his mom and his dad. Michelle's portrait is purposefully painted in greyscale. And I agree, it looks nothing like her.

Re: Obama's presidential portrait.

Obama's "exoticism" and Michelle's "shyness" were meant to make them both look "nicer". I don't know if there was a whole team or one man only's artwork, but I sense some projections there.
No white president would have been painted that way. I'm disappointed there are no colourful birds and indigenous folks in the background.

The one of Barack Obama looks quite good to me but not the one of Michelle. Did the same artist do both?

Two separate Afro-American artists:

Re: Obama's presidential portrait.

Projection is what an artist does, that's the difference between art and a photo. They look good to me - lot of strong character coming out of his painting (the jungly flowers are a weird idea though love the color), while she is pretty elegant. Classy and understated in pastel. No need for loud anything there, I'd like a painting of me like that. I bet the artist worked closely with Michelle. I also think maybe her hubby sees her this way, too..timeless, in a hue.

Maybe it expresses his secret desire to be sent on gardening leaf.

Or just to turn a new leaf.

I guess he is leafing the interpretation to others.
