Has Britain gone down the drain?

A British writer thinks so.

Theodore Dalrymple [pen name] explains how Britain went down the drain

"The prison psychiatrist-turned-columnist says the nation's post-war rebellious streak has morphed into unstoppable vulgarity."

No more and no less so than the rest of the west.

He already looks like he's on the lower rungs of the drain ladder

He sounds like a smug git, who galumphed off to the colonies. Its the politicians and the media that have guttered Britain.

That'll be the other Dalrymple (and a fine writer he is too!)

Re: Has Britain gone down the drain?

I agree with him. Though making just the intellos responsible for a deficit of personal responsibility of other classes..I disagree. Those who fall into a victimhood-culture trap are to be blamed, too. Personal responsibility should be expected on all fronts. Interesting that he as a shrink and Peterson as a psychologist make identical observations and conclusions.

He has a point.. but.. the same opinions could apply to most 'post industrial' nations (and anyway, haven't the cultural elite always bemoaned the thickies.. while happily taking state subsidies for the opera)

For me there is one difference though.. mass media access has inculcated attitudes of entitlement and ego. Nothing wrong with being poor and proud (I was).. but taking pride in ignorance is something new.

I used to read Theodore Dalrymple's articles from time to time and wonder why on earth he seemed so grumpy compared to his attitude in his travel books.

It was only quite recently that it dawned on me to check his first name on the book covers in our library...

Culturally induced ignorance is studied by agnotology. The research is usually more honest and interesting than pc politics or trendy anthropology.

I do not think victimhood or ignorance is an overall Western phenomenon. Maybe. What if it is a way to sulk after losing power, colonies, unearned priviledges, etc? Not all West was a collonial beast. I blame Bourdieu in France, though, clearly.

I find some of his stuff a bit hairy, but this article is fairly close to the mark.

He deliberately cultivates a rather bad-tempered, slightly overblown style. Even his pseudonym is intended to capture the spirit of "a gouty old man looking out of the window of his London club, port in hand, lamenting the degenerating state of the world."*

I enjoy reading his stuff, for the same reason I enjoy reading Rod Liddle and George Monbiot. Even if I vehemently disagree with his conclusions, I learn something along the way.

I wish more writers were like that.

Re: Has Britain gone down the drain?

He is definitely very cranky but I take it it that his schtick is exaggerated on purpose...a bit of entertaining pathos. Making fun of himself.

On the other hand, knowing a few shrinks and having taught a few, too, everybody becomes that way. Aside of Oliver Sacks.

One ingredient to coming across as a strong personality with an important message is to not take yourself too seriously and to be able to occasionally satirize your own persona.

The difference between the obvious and the absurd often being extremely subtle.

Na ja. I guess shrinks are close to philosophers, really. Same thing. Making fun of self aggrandizing by exaggerating every vice humans manifest themselves with is a way to cope with so much insanity around him. Except he isn't really exaggerating so much, that's the sad part. I still don't think you can take the poorest population as completely void of any control over their faith and assign it to academics who by trying to understand a phenomena...they seem to excuse it. I don't think they really are. But it goes well with the Liessmann text I pointed out in NZZ on propagation of fear vs having a legit political opinion.

Well, I think a big difference is that philosophers want to come across as super smart and will thus disagree with everything you say on some minor point of technicality, so you seem stupid, whereas shrinks will go along with whatever crap you tell them and maybe rephrase it so it sounds more intelligent - so you may even end up believig it yourself.

Neither profession differentiates between their private life and their work and will act like that all the time and everywhere.

Well, I only know one shrink, so maybe that's anh unfair extrapolation. But I definietely think she doesn't differentiate between work and free time.
