Canada-Saudi debacle

In the brave new world of tweets governing international politics, we have the Canadian foreign department tweeting the following:

Quote:
Canada is gravely concerned about additional arrests of civil society and women’s rights activists in #SaudiArabia, including Samar Badawi. We urge the Saudi authorities to immediately release them and all other peaceful #humanrights activists.

followed by the Saudi's kicking out the Canadian Embassador

Quote:
We consider the Canadian ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia persona non grata and order him to leave within the next 24 hours.

KSA has followed up with removing all Saudi students studying in Canada, all Saudi medical patients in Canada and halting the 4 billion in trade between the two countries.

For who?

The Saudi budget deficit is huge because of the largesse to keep the citizens quiet.

Tough call, and not mine to make (as I am not a political science expert).

In my opinion, Canadians have gotten very loud-and-proud of being left and modern liberal. Can't forget that many of the social liberties that Canada has, comes from having a big powerful bully neighbor to the south.

Totally agree that KSA's social rights are a mess and need change, however demanding foreign authorities to go against the laws of their country over twitter---with nothing to back it up (I doubt the US will ever back Canada over Saudi :P)--- is not the brightest idea.

On a political side, kind of similar to the whole US wanting to change Swiss Banking Privacy laws. (I know we don't compare banking laws to equality rights, but some Swiss were very upset that the US was demanding foreign law change)

I cannot see Cannadians liking that idea too much. They still keep proudly putting their flags on their backpacks to show how un-US they are.

I wander how Peterson will comment on this. Probably contributing this selfrighteous mess to Trudeau. He'd be correct.

(Do you have a CA flag on your lumberjack outdoorsy backpack?)

hahaha, no I don't sport any Canadian paraphernalia except when it comes to hockey gear. (And of course my Iron Ring - which I did see a lot of people wearing in KSA)

Bravo Canada.

Oh, and if they don't want their airline to fly to Canada, why not prohibit their airline from using Canada's airspace to get to the excited states?

They can't do Los Angeles without a stop in between somewhere, and even their JFK and Washington flights would have to divert well south adding a few hours.

And if the UAE want's to join the party neither Emirates nor Etihad would want to divert around Canada ...

Boy would they be pissed seeing as Qatar Airways can fly the shorter routes.

Pity the US didn't impose the same banking law changes on Delaware, Utah, et. al.

Re: Canada-Saudi debacle

KSA is playing real Politik. Because it's a pro western country they probably won't jail Canadians on trumped up charges like Iran did and does.

The arrested activist is also a political opponent of the regime.

KSA is going through a dramatic change and doesn't want to lose face at home.

Still, peaceful opposition is a must for a successful society and I hope a solution will be found soon.

In fact, 82.7% of travellers sporting Canadian flags on their backpacks are Americans trying desperately to conceal their nationality.

As your own quote (grubstreet?) admits - an illegal immigrant was held prior to deportation and freed. contrast and compare to Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe (held on fake charges) or Canadians dying in Iranian jails.
