Open again and it looks like they chinned it with their military solutions. If they have the dead drone then the eco warriors who launched it should start packing their spare underpants for when they are given 5 years in Holloway for it. They’ll be getting a fairly different kind of environmental experience in there.
Uh.... huh. Eco warriors, eh? As opposed to some snot nosed kids? Or a pissed off jerk, angry over an airline’s failure to pay compensation for a missed flight?

Would love to know the source of your insight into the motivations of this / these tool(s)...

Two people arrested, let's hope they throw the book at them.

I'd like to see the prosecution followed by a group compensation claim from all the passengers, airlines and insurers affected.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

There are already off-the-shelf drones with a cellular radio link. Good luck finding the perpetrators then.

The media was going with the eco-warrior line on Wednesday, to be fair. I guess there was some source with access to whatever was going on with the authorities. No idea if that’s confirmed, though.

Different experience. Yes. Holloway closed in 2016.

Media, or daily mail? Haven’t seen anything like that in more reputable sources yet...

Also 47 and 54 doesn’t really fit the profile for eco-warriors. My money’s on Julian Assange libertarian types who don’t believe in paying taxes because Magna Carta/ Freeman on the Land.

I didn't say "reputable"

DM, Telegraph and Guardian mentioned "eco warrior". Right wing media seems a bit lost because it's not a brown Muslim terrorist so they have to go with whatever will fill in with clicks and shares, I guess.

Might have the wrong people. These ones don’t look like eco warriors and have witnesses they were working. Lots of pressure to arrest.

Their names, photos, life-stories and value of their house have been dragged over the headlines of the tabloids. Poor sods

This to me should be 100% illegal... no suspects for any crime should be allowed to be named until formally charged. The English media laws are imo a disgrace in this regard.

A bad situation. The police were under intense pressure to find 'somebody' and may have done little more that a Google search for "drone enthusiast Crawley" to achieve that, then made the arrests and leaked their names out.

Presumably, the personal information came mainly from Facebook or similar and is a warning to those who will put all those details in the public domain.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

A damaged drone has been found near the north perimeter of the airport.

This drone situation was a serious incident and many people's travel plans were disrupted.

It's difficult to understand how two innocent people can be arrested, held for 36 hours, have their house searched and their identities published in the media. I suppose the Police had good reason for their actions.

Their lives have been turned upside down, they must have become the most hated people in the UK.

Not sure they even managed to do that, from what i read it seems more likely that one of the neighbours shopped them !!

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

Easier to find someone quickly and apportion blame, rather than dwell on the fact the authorities were not prepared and clueless as to what to do.

My money is still on the Russians.

Excuse me while I elbow wipe the dust off my tin foil hat.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

Eh? This is nuts! If not drones, then what exactly was the reason for the grounded flights and the cause of all the disruption?

BBC News

Det Ch Supt Jason Tingley said no footage of a drone had been obtained.

He said there was "always a possibility" the reported sightings of drones were mistaken.
