Eh? This is nuts! If not drones, then what exactly was the reason for the grounded flights and the cause of all the disruption?

BBC News

Det Ch Supt Jason Tingley said no footage of a drone had been obtained.

He said there was "always a possibility" the reported sightings of drones were mistaken.
So among the range of possibilities are;
1. There were never any drones
2. There was a faulty out of control drone that flew over Gatwick before crashing

???????????

Are they actually saying they halted all flights based on someone in the control tower, or staff on the ground who thought they saw a drone? And then that person or persons thought they saw it again at various times through out Thursday into Friday? Huh?

Those darn birds, trying to look like drones

<<"We are interviewing those who have reported these sightings>> that would be the guys with the yellow vests on the picture in your link, right?

Back out the nick now. Tin foil hat time but does anyone else reckon there’s more to this than meets the eye? Dodgy sequence of events for sure.

P.s. anyone need some double glazing fitted in the new year then let me know

What if the drone is following a pre-programmed route? Then the only thing you could do would be to jam the GPS band(s), which would be another effective way to shut an airport down.
then you could make the drone navigate based on intertia or camera based system, then there's nothing to jam.

Or they just nabbed any old patsy who would fit the media's thrown-together profile of "the maniac" so they could open up the airport again and clear the backlog of flights.

No doubt there's more to the story but the airport is operational again over one of the busiest times of the year.

Not the original sightings, only some of the later sightings.

Simpler to preprogram a route based on gps.

I'd like to see the charge for this along the lines of endangering life with a minimum jail term.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

Perhaps we will get a photo this time. Oh wait, it is dark out.

Better to shut the airport until the sun comes up tomorrow. Oh wait, it’s the UK the sun doesn’t come up in January.

According to FR24 some flights are landing ...

This is so weird. If it was some dumb kid or drone flying amateur they would have caught them by now. (I think)
