Gatwick airport closed due to drones

Surprised nobody posted on this!
Maybe I failed to find the thread, as usual?

Anyway Gatwick airport is closed due to some anti-socials flying drones over the runways.

Over 10,000 people had their flights delayed, no end in sight.

They ruled out shooting them down due to stray bullets.

Surprised they cannot simply interfere with the RF control frequencies.

What literally scares the crap out of me is how easily this was done.

And will somebody please tell the daily snail that this indeed is an extraordinary circumstance.

Army involved, could be a terrorist attack which is still ongoing and they don't want to panic people.

Best comment I read was “I hope a mother of three who has been stuck at the airport for 9 hours finds the person responsible before the police do”.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

A couple of drones made 3 passes over part of the airport and until thry are found, nothing is moving.

Technology exists to block drones and apparently other measures are also available to prevent this.

It costs money

Look out for copy cat events, it seems a very good way to maximise disruption without having the hassle of taking an explosive device through security

You did but it's not your fault. The subject is scattered all over EF. Here and here ....

It just highlights how damned easy it would be to strap an explosive device to a drone and fly it in the flight path of a passenger jet.

I've said before here, when we lived near Heathrow, loads of houses in the Datchet area were cased by drones before being broken into.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

Presumably the drone is a Chinese manufactured item and will have been controlled (or have been suspected of being controlled) by a Huwaei mobile phone.

So far flight cancellations have impacted 110,000 passengers

It is incredible that there is no quick and effective defence!!

It is tricky, they do not want to shoot since they cannot guarantee where the bullet ends. Disturbing signals might be a bad idea on an airport.

And this is one of the reasons why police forces have tested and are still testing with hunting birds.

Re: Gatwick airport closed due to drones

A nasty Christmas present from Putin, I reckon.

Came through Heathrow this evening and there were many exhausted Gatwick passengers trying to get on flights. It is going to be a lot worse tomorrow, by all accounts. The disruption is astonishing.

Probably some spotty nosed teenager in the back bedroom...

The more I play around with the soldering iron and the $5 packets of components from Aliexpress etc., the more I realize just how easy it is to build some very nasty stuff!

Runway open atm.

How long for? Anyone's guess at this point.

Just hope they catch whoever did this.

I reckon the "pilot" will be tired now, batteries for her and the drone will need a recharge.. Maybe they'll pop up again at Heathrow tomoro or later today.

It's a whole new avenue to disruption. Either for activism, for the hell of it or to tie up resources while something else goes down.

Well it's certainly been a distraction from Brexit!

An individual Eco warrior is the suggestion in the papers this morning. Too organised and sustained for a teenager and besides they need their long hours of sleep.

It'll be those pesky Russian tourists, sight seeing.
