Problem with means testing is how do you define what are "sufficient" means?

What is your aim of a means test? To ensure people do not receive benefits which are not "necessary" for them?

Do you have the same definition for UK pensioners living in say, UK, Romania or Switzerland?

That's sadly the aim of every benefit means test isn't it? It would no doubt be as arbitrary as a lot of other UK threshhold decisions which is no doubt why everyone over a certain age gets it.

Why the aggression? And I'd wager that the majority of OAPs who have retired abroad are not hurting for 200 quid. Those people are arguably less likely to be just living on a state pension.

The UK is an expensive country to live in, plenty of cheaper places with a better climate. You seem pretty aggressive & personal TBH, funny you don't like it when it comes back to you.

Because you got personal & wrote "I'm too tired of this merry-go-round to explain again the reality of huge amounts of people to a privileged minority male such as yourself." I don't think you have any justification for your claim, you are just jealous of someone who has done reasonably well.

You wonder why I don't kowtow to the authority of school teachers.
And you're looking for points to score. The fact is you are in that demographic and it makes a difference. I have also never wondered about your opinion of teachers. It's fairly obvious what you think. But, internet. And believe me, or not, your choice, I have no jealousy. I have no need. What a strange little notion. And if you think constantly trying to belittle me via one facet of "me" is going to get me to keep my opinions to myself when this forum is full of opinions you are, as they say where I'm from, having a giraffe. However, to use your words, I don't "kowtow" either.

I'm not just a teacher, as I think I've said before.

The point of this is? But oh I love the UK, soggy climate warts and all. I don't want to live anywhere else. And at the risk of both of us sounding like we're six, I believe you started it. Again. I'm curious as to why you seem to object to my having an opinion when we are all apparently extremely welcome to yours.

Could be the fact that it's just words on a page and tone is lost. If that is the case, fair enough, but as you seem determined to make it personal, whereas I am not, apologies.

Yep, I think that the extra gifty stuff should be means tested. My aunt doesnt need it and spent her fuel allowance on a garden bench. My grandmother needs more than she got but was very grateful for it.

That isn't to say I think means testing is always fair, UK child benefit for a start, but a line in the sand has to be drawn somewhere. But you know, my opinion. To which I believe I am entitled to without a couple of fellow posters attempting to get me to sit down and shut up. But then I've never been good at that - the sitting down and the shutting up.

Have a good one gents. Got that Friday feeling

According to the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index (MMGPI), the UK is number 15 on the list rating which countries have the best pensions, below Columbia! So proposing means testing of some of these miserable UK benefits seems a bit - er - mean?

I don't believe that the free health care that UK pensioners get is factored into those no's, it makes a huge difference & probably comes above Switzerland once that is accounted for.

Perhaps free health care should be means tested?
