looking for hackers, probably!

The death of a Canadian entrepreneur has left a huge stash of cryptocurrencies locked off from the people who own them.

Quadriga, Canada's biggest cryptocurrency exchange, said it's unable to gain access to $145 million of bitcoin and other digital assets after Gerald Cotten, its 30-year old CEO and co-founder, died of complications arising from Crohn's Disease while traveling in India.

Rumor has it he isn't dead... if you follow some of the bitcoins put into the corporate accounts, you'll see they never end up in a large "corporate" wallet...

That is because they store them in wallets, not every exchange uses one big wallet to store all they have, splitting up in a big bunch of diff wallets is nothing rare.

Yes, I have some conspiratorial questions myself , one of which is: how come the company didn't have a protocol in place if something like this should happen?

It's all relatively new, and rulings take time to come in place, so the only answer would be "since nobody forced them to do so"

It's a market with low regulation and a lot of cowboys where shit just keeps happening.

Do you have a protocol in place for your surviving relatives relating your digital assets (*) in case someone puts a bucket in your path which you unwillingly kick?

(*) E-Mail, Telephone, Facebook, EF, your own computer etc. etc.

Re: looking for hackers, probably!

So, Bloomberg reports (behind paywall but the first ten articles a month are free) that Ernest&Young have been asked to investigate.

They found six cold wallets owned by Quadriga but five of those appear to have been empty since April. The sixth was used to transfer BTC's that were received from third persons to Quadriga's hot wallet on Dec 3.

Some additional bits:
According to 20min, the deceased made his wife the sole heir a few days before his death. And his name on the death certificate, which was issued in India, isn't spelled correctly.

Re: looking for hackers, probably!

If they know the wallets it will become very hard for his wife to spend the money.

We might not know who holds which wallet, but every transaction is open for all to see, so only a fool would accept coins from those.

I wonder if ever in future legislation comes up where there wil be some sort of register, and banks/traders/stores are not allowed to accept money from unregistered wallets.

Only for paid users.

I just have a list in my paper bookkeeping with account names/passwords the passwords are encrypted and my wife has the key. If both of us pass away at the same time stuff is simply lost. (most valuable would be the XboX account :P )
