"The world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours. You young people, full of vigour and vitality, are in the bloom of life, like the sun at eight or nine in the morning. Our hope is placed on you. The world belongs to you." - Mao

"He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future." - Not Mao

There's a long tradition of making good use of the enthusiasm and energy of idealistic young people.

We praise them when they say smart things about climate change and about social conscience. But we swear under our breaths when they bring their friends home and play their music until 2am.

If I wasn’t using my phone, I would have posted one of those idyllic bucolic scenes of blue eyed, blonde haired, Bavarian youth frolicking in the late 1930s.
Ah yes, a group of youthful FKK Wandervogel sitting around the campfire and singing songs about being youthful FKK Wandervogel and sitting around the campfire.

Makes many an old croney swear that those years weren't that dark and evil after all.

The power of propaganda, eh?

If the blind adults cannot make right decisions (e.g. Brexit comes to mind), then maybe uncorrupted and plentiful of ideas children can show the proper path to follow.

Whatever teachers do is going to stick in someone's craw though, isn't it?

Shielding kids from all political views will be labelled as "snowflake" teaching. Equally, teaching them that everything is harmonious and everyone's opinion is a rainbow and valuable to society will be seen as leftie inclusive guff, just the same as denouncing either side's political views will be seen as "politicising" or "radicalising".

Your Belgium example is more likely to put kids off than indoctrinate them. It's like forcing kids to go to church for brainwashing. Normally turns 'em right off.
And what is it called if schools/teachers force one specific way of thinking up to the kids?

School should educate about the issue based on facts, they should teach the kids how the environment works and what things influence it, but also that if we want things to chance what the effects of such change can be amongst towards for example our financials. And if schools after such lessons say "those that want to participate in the demonstration with not be seen as class skippers" that is all fine by me. Forcing kids to participate tells me all about how the school is forcing their political point of view upon the kids. But what else to expect from a country where kids from public schools are forced to kneel in mosques.

Also those demo's also are one huge joke, afterwards the street is littered with piles of McDonalds packages.

Clearly they pay scant attention to the ongoing lecturing about healthy eating...

Who says they give a rat‘s ass about teachers and their politics..?

If this applies than I also expect no uproar if teachers explain to the kids that Hitler was a great guy, the nazi's are great and that they must participate in some right-extremists party.

Since hey, nobody pays attention and they'll form their own opinion anyway.

Probably. Kids have always ‘known better’ than adults since the dawn of puberty.

It is part of being young, first you are being taught about Santa-Claus, and a short later that you understand the world. Only to often fall hard when leaving school.

Depends on a school and teachers, too. But I am a notoriously half-full type of optimist.

Objectively speaking, that would be far less likely to work.

Children typically grow up in an environment where much is taken care of for them. They get fed, clothed, housed, and most probably don't spend much time thinking about where the money for that comes from, or the money that pays for their school for that matter. Most of them probably don't spend much time considering that much of what they freely enjoy should not be taklen for granted but is only there because others fought and some even died for it. So the whole happy-clappy socialism-lite message resonates much more strongly than any other political point of view.

Maybe coincidentally some teachers do encourage that way of thinking, but even if they didn't I think children would tend that way anyway. It's only to be expected.

It's only when they make other experiences in life that some modify or refine those view, whereas others do not. Clemenceau's famous quote about socialism and all that.

This is not to say that some adults don't shamelessly exploit the views of children.

Pestalozzi is what they need. They worked hard with him for their schooling.

(He did tend to give away all to wanderers, including his belt and shoelaces, but that's another story...a chapter for kids on "kindness")

I'm surprised actually that nobody else has remarked that Greta Thunberg's middle name is Tintin.

Now that is definitely not her fault.

You think Nome est Omen?

Tintin.com has made no less than 27 reports on the environment and ecological issues
