Hmmm most of the pics show rubbish stacked on and around the overflowing bins. Hardly ‘strewn’ everywhere. Even the cups on a table outside a cafe suggests some thought towards disposal.

Daily Mail loves a bit of selective journalism to continually put the boot in with anyone under 40.

At best they're grasping for straws. I mean, really, those pictures with single plastic containers actually tell the exact opposite, namely that hardly anybody threw their waste on the street.

You should see what's left after the Streetparade!

The fundamental issue however remains:
Reducing our footprints means a severe reduction of standards of living. No longer a new iPhone every other year, new clothes with every other season, holiday trips across the globe, rooms heated to 22°C, commuting 50-100km every day, one car or more per household, food transported across the globe, etc. Everybody agrees it would be a good thing, until it's their turn to action. NIMBY, effectively.

I like this one:

Greenpeace produces throw away cups? LOL.

Which lead me to this. How is 25p for a throw away cup a good thing for our oceans? Reusable cups are.

That's not so difficult to achieve, though. I can tick pretty much all of that stuff off and don't even feel it's much of a chore.

I don't really do anything special to achieve this, so I imagine many people are in the same boat. I don't commute 50-100KM but I either take public transport, walk or bike it depending on global warming that day.

We tend to eat local and in-season produce, although not 100% (we eat bananas, for example). Heating is only up to 21C. Holiday in Switzerland or just over the border. Current clothes are *cough* coming back into fashion again.

We're no eco-warriors, just a bit careful.

I still regret giving away an old Biba top. It's come back into fashion twice since, and would be worth a fortune now. We're pretty much the same as you. We don't have a car in CH, bought our sofa and bed from the Brocki, OH has millionaire taste with a pound shop mentality, and is probably a Cumulus Punkt millionaire . We keep the heating down - OH wears 5 layers in summer, so another few makes precious little difference (he's not fat, he's just cold). Our only 'luxury' is travel.

Same here. Defo I don't buy lots of clothes...but I'm more careful with quality (meaning durability to me) these days. Plus some pieces will never get out of fashion if you know what to buy.

Undoubtedly many are. Nonetheless Zürich airport keeps reporting new passenger records, there are ever more cars on the roads that keep making more km a year, and commuting distances keep increasing regardless of the means used. As are mobile devices and electric cars (rare earth metals anyone?).

In order to significantly change consumer behaviour and industrial production without creating a bureaucratic monster, energy would need to be significantly more expensive worldwide. Which of course would hit the low-earners hardest, as we just saw in France, but worldwide.

Re: Give them back their lives [politicization of young people]

I saw the teens protested in Lausanne then were fighting, hanging in groups. Seems a great day off for them. Police were all out and not very happy when they almost ran over some of them next to me.

I wonder how many actually care about the climate. And how much it cost for police time to have all of these "activists"?

Same goes for all gatherings - there will be an element who tip up at these events for a scuffle and no other reason.

Remember the footie hooligans back in the 80s / 90s? There were groups there that weren't even remotely connected with either team at the match and some weren't even footie fans. They just had a coordinated group that would meet up at games for a fight.

How do you know the police aren't interested in football?

Well. Dont see them demonstrating in countries like china.( one one the major climate sinners ) There the police ( government ) would beat the life out of them.

what a sorry, jaded bunch on this thread.

You'll be eating your hat, literally, in 15 years or so when these kids are starving to death after repeated global crop failures due to climate change.

In 15 yrs those kids will still be ordering at McDonalds or buy their food at the supermarket, this since they have the advantage of living in a rich society. Perhaps at higher prices, perhaps sometimes something not available but that's all we will notice here.
