Give them back their lives [politicization of young people]

And stop politicizing young children and youth. Just because they ( the adults ) don't have any solutions they project it onto the young people. Give the young back their freedom and let them have have their youth and childhood

An interesting read but it is hardly a new concept. Children have always been manipulated to further "grown-up" agendas, but thankfully children have only a marginal interest in politics so the children´s parlement is not going mainsream anytime soon.

Alas, even in Ticino:

"Venerdì anche i giovani del Canton Ticino parteciperanno all'iniziativa mondiale. "

"Friday, Ticinesi children will also participate in the international student climate strike"

Have they been kept in a basement or something? What a hysterical post. Those who have an early interest in politics can pursue it these days, but the vast majority don't care and are not forced to do anything they don't wan't to.

Do you think that is a bad thing Tom?

Seems like the adults have been procrastinating on the environment, as doing anything about is gets in the way of profit so they won't budge. Perhaps the kids saying something might raise some awareness, personally I doubt it, like what happened with Occupy a great big hype about justice and in the end it fizzled out, as making money was far more important then social equality. Humans eh!

Should start with teachers impressing their world view onto their pupils.

They've barely got time to "impress" the curriculum into them, never mind pontificating about putting the world to rights.

I object. I try not to "impress" student. I selfishly let them "impress" me.

"The world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours. You young people, full of vigour and vitality, are in the bloom of life, like the sun at eight or nine in the morning. Our hope is placed on you. The world belongs to you." - Mao

"He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future." - Not Mao

There's a long tradition of making good use of the enthusiasm and energy of idealistic young people.

Re: Give them back their lives [politicization of young people]

I think it was much easier to not politicise kids when I was a kid, but even then, I clearly remember the Cypriot War and the Munich Olympics assassinations. My dad kept asking me to leave the room whilst he watched the news, but that just made me curious. Now, with so many media outlets and social media, it's incredibly difficult to 'shield' kids from events, so the best you can do is to monitor their exposure and answer the inevitable questions.

When the Westminster attack happened, I was looking after a friend's kids for a few days. I made the decision to not have the tv on in the house that day, and luckily for me, they were too busy with their school work and playing computer games to notice. I say "luckily for me" because I really didn't relish the thought of having to explain things to someone else's kids. I didn't see it as being 'my place', if that makes sense.

If I wasn’t using my phone, I would have posted one of those idyllic bucolic scenes of blue eyed, blonde haired, Bavarian youth frolicking in the late 1930s.

Just reminded me of scenes on the news of miners on the picket line with their kids shouting "SCAB!" In my tender years I thought a scab was something you picked off your knee during morning assembly.

Re: Give them back their lives [politicization of young people]

Politics was an enormous part of my childhood. It was unavoidable where I grew up. I think that's where my loathing of the left began.

I didn't meet any Tories until university, but I soon learned to loathe them too!

There's something a bit unwholesome about politically active young people. They were never the sort of people you wanted to go for a pint with.

I don't think kids should be shielded from events. The challenge is to shield them from the propaganda of the different opinion leaders (for lack of a better word).

I think these days it is incredibly difficult for young people to form an opinion of their own.

As I notice often for adults too.
The young ones don't really have time to develope their own thoughts - the older ones don't take the time for it.

Children should be children and not mini adults.

Also, I despise strikes of any kind, for any reason.

My grandfather was a big union guy for most of his life. He once told me that the thing he was most proud of as a union leader, was that he NEVER had to resort to calling a strike and had always been able to resolve things to evryone's satisfaction.

Why are you hating on blue eyed, blonde haired?!

I am on my cell but don't need to post pics of hitler jungen, konsomol nor trendy punks or squatters. The youth will always be interested in idealism and changing the status quo, be it political, religious, etc. I think more so more apolitical we will try to make the environment around them, paradoxically. I guess we have to strive for informing them but not recruiting them, which isn't difficult. It is good not to share personal convictions with them, it makes them more curious. They tend to give better anwers and ask better questions, too. If politics is what it takes for kids to learn to suggest an alternative before they want to negate something, so be it. Protests and demonstrations are hardly ever constructive.
