Re: Fascism parfumes ad WTF?

As per usual, the BBC never misses a chance to slander Israel.
The explanation is further down the page, where many miss it -

"A female voice can be heard whispering phrases in Hebrew that mark her key policies - "judicial reform", "separation of powers" and "restraining the Supreme Court".

Spraying herself with the perfume, Ms Shaked then delivers the last line: "To me, it smells like democracy."

Typical Orwellian doublespeak BS, conditioning the masses to think that when she's called a fascist it can't be true - 'she even calls herself one!'

You missed the point, she refutes the claim that she is a fascist by demonstrating her democratic credentials.

Calling someone a fascist is usually a lazy slur. this is no exception.

Re: Fascism parfumes ad WTF?

Missing the point or not ... let’s be careful here.

IMO, whether it is used in playful way or just to strike a contrast between democracy or other political system, it’s just plainly tasteless to use such comparisons grotesque way. Well, if Jews given past Holocaust history find it humorous then be it. How far can people go by manipulating others emotions to achieve a desired political outcome is mind boggling! Surely, affected survivors of the WWII won’t find it amusing.

I guess the constructors of this ad had achieved an intended goal by sparking an online debate.

Perhaps she is doing it since some of her political opponents try to label her as a fascist

Re: Fascism parfumes ad WTF?

If the ad was made by her opponents mocking her policies that would've been poignant and effective. If that ad is devised by her own campaign to shed 'fascist' labels then it is borderline retarded.

I think it's very well done. Possibly missed its mark but from a perfume ad conventions point of view... nailed it. Fascinating piece of media... my A level kids will love it.

She wants to limit the possibilities of the courts to "interfere" in decisions of her government and in effect make the executive branch absolute... its pretty damn close to the textbook definition of fascism, no?

But I must admit that of all the right winged politicians of the world she seems an unusual exception to have this level of humour. Trump for example has never made a single self critical joke in his life.

That's just because he plays his "I am a simple man, easily trusted" shtick. Depends on the audience you are trying to appeal to as a politician, innit. Not your actual sense of humor.

Has anyone seen "making roaming great again" campaign here? Lol.

I dont think so. I think he genuinely does lack the ability to make any kind of joke that is reflecting on himself. And I believe that he isnt alone with that. Its not as if Berlusconi, Orban or any of the other grumpy old men was much better at laughing about themselves.

It is a cool theory.. Although they keep getting a lot support, selling their theory.

One has to see politics as marketing, to get a better feel for genuine honesty. I don't care how much people manage to laugh at themselves, as long as they address the right skeletons in the right closets.

Democracy depends, among others, on the seperation of powers. In Israel, similar to other democracies there are 3:
1. the legistlative - the parliament. voted in every 4 years max.
2. the executive - the governemt. voted in every 4 years max.
3. the judicial. appointed by a committee with a representation for all 3 powers.

Each has powers over the other 2 - except the Judicial, which once elected remains until retirement (nice job if you can get it).

Ms. Shaked , as Minister for Justice, tried to bring more control over the Judicial power (the way judges are elected/chosen, when can the judicial power overrule the government) It will not not make the executive power absolute.

However, unlike other democracies, it has 3m people in its territory of legal voting age that can't vote. Who happen to be Arabs. So, no, not really like other democracies.

Have you ever actualy lsitened to speeches by Berlusconi, Orban etc. I mean, what they actually say rather than what Spiegel Online choses to edit it down to. Plenty of self-depreciation and between-the-lines levity there.

Not so much when its Martin Schultz or Heiko Maas who is speaking.

In fact we all remember one particular showdown between Berlusconi and Scultz in which it was definitely Schultz who came away looking bad for being unable to respond to a joke.
