The roof was wood, most of it is not, it will be restored.

Tom

16 statues were removed from the roof just four days ago for renovation. Lets hope they removed more works.

We’ll have to see....but there is a massive organ, all sorts of relics - I can’t imagine those were all removed. I hope they can recover a lot of it - not everything can be rebuilt/replaced.

Maybe something like this from the official Paris web-site:

Meet a priest
Every day a priest is at your disposal in the reception chapel for spiritual maintenance and/or to receive the sacrament of forgiveness.

Main languages: French – English – Spanish – Italian – Portuguese – German – Japanese – Chinese

Weekdays and Saturdays: from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 19:00. *
Sundays: from 15:00 to 19:00.

I don't really care about the building, but I hope the workers are all ok.

Gotta applaud (good or bad way) the press e.g the N.Y Times:

In 1909, Joan of Arc, who had helped France battle the English and was burned at the stake centuries earlier, was beatified in the cathedral by Pope Pius X.

Does EVERYTHING have to be about Trump?

Such a shame.
No, but even you must admit with such an absolutely idiotic statement such as he made, he does rather line it up for people to take the pee out of him. It's just too easy.

I was only there once, August 1980 hitchhiking back to Yorkshire from Spain and I had a quick 40 winks in a rear pew during a morning service. I've never been religious, but buildings like this take us back to our medieval past. What the craftsmen achieved back then is on a par with the Apollo space program of the late 60's - in both cases we would struggle today to do what they did. To see those 900 year old timbers in that spire collapse is heart breaking.

But York Minster recovered from, possibly, a similar fire 35 years ago. I hope the will, technology and the money, is found to do something similar for Paris.

I’ve been to York Minster - that makes me hopeful, thanks for the reminder.

Re: Notre Dame on fire

This is so sad to see.

I attended Mass at Notre Dame several times, and always found the experience uniquely uplifting.

I hope that all who were in the building at the time got out safely.

Re: Notre Dame on fire

With hindsight, one does wonder why no contingency plan to remove important objects in case of fire, as so much of the building made of wood.

I find it hard to believe that the "Crown of Thorns" would have been left at risk. Call me old fashioned, but I would have thought there would have been a rota for number of the clergy (Priests) praying around it 24/7.

{Crown of Thorns = Catholics believe the relic is the 'crown' placed on Jesus' head in mockery as he was crucified}

I wonder if the insurance will try and peddle it as an act of god...
Meaning as it is god´s house that would then be arson and arson is not covered.

You'll have to ask Spanky that question. His tweet, presuming to know more about firefighting than those at the scene battling the fire, was nothing more than an attempt to make it about him.

And everyone who acknowledges it is abetting in making it about Trump. Surely you know how it works by now?
