The thread to the end of the world

Funny how the Notre Dame thread dissolved into climate change and trump and the beginning of the coming holy war.
So I thought: “Slammer, why not start a thread about the end of the world?”
Just to see how far it goes.

Here we go…
As a species I think that we have at most a few hundred years left, it´s not just climate change that is going to punch our lights out, not over population, that will solve it´s self, just give it a bit of time… Not the degrading of the biosphere, the wars won´t kill us. But methinks a pithy combination of all factors will cull the population in a Malthusian catastrophe. A combination of problems that will not have a single solution and will be above our ability to comprehend let alone solve

We won´t go out in a bang, but with a whimper, a whinge and a whine. Perhaps as soon as our main energy source turns into and energy sink, granted, we will stave the inevitable off for a while with renewables but in the end, you can´t replace good old oil.
I think that in the end we will simply give up, lose the will to continue and let ourselves go slowly extinct while waiting for the divine intervention that will save us all.
Going to be a long wait.

One little rock where once a civilization was. Now try and imagine that there is no other lifeform in the universe.

There's a large rock heading towards the Earth that will annihilate forms of life above that of an amoeba.

I fear our brains will become digitalized allowing computers to manipulate and override our thoughts, thus making us slaves to the software we programmed.

It'll be like WallE: the planet will become a rubbish heap and people will become so fat they're all in hover scooter things.

Why should that be a fear? Perhaps combining humans with digitalisation could be the next step in our evolution, not too sure about "digital" though, perhaps a quantumizing would provide the needed processing power to effectivly "run" a human. And what makes you so sure that this has not already happened? How woluld a simulated Olygirl know she is not mearly a app running on Windows 50r2?

I think evolution works the other way, the more somebody else or a machine does for us, the less we need our brain and thus that can become dumber since why evolve what is not needed/used. People already are becoming dumber over the last decades, if that lasts long enough we'll eventually be living in caves again :P

Not too sure about AI, would not a strong AI develop psychosis, become neurotic, heck imagine a strong AI running V-mware and going schitzoid?
Then if you think about it almost all righ-ranking nazis had a IQ of around 140. Imagine what an AI with an IQ in the gadzillions would do to us poor benighted meat bags.

Yup, but imagine you could upload consciousness and imprint it to the very fabric of spacetime. You would be for want of a better word... god.

Neal Asher's work has AIs that don't particularly like humans. And the ones that do have a robust sense of humour towards humans who try to harm them.

but yeah, the shithouse is going up in flames.
