Re: UK-Which century do they live in?

In the U.K. they tend to let old, redundant laws lapse rather than spend a lot of tax-payers money getting them changed.

Other laws still valid in the U.K:

It's illegal to be drunk in a pub. (since 1872).

All males over 14 have to practice longbow shooting for two hours a week.

If you live in York, you can legally shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow (but not on Sundays),

Re: UK-Which century do they live in?

They live in the past !

Just think about all the old TV shows they run and re-run, during Xmas period guaranteed to have at least one programme about 2nd World War each day or a film.....think Dam Busters, Battle of Britain, etc

The archaic state of institutions (House of Commons...) the state of infrastucture, pot holes in the roads, lousy health service, state of the railways....

The UK definitely lives in the past

Not sure if I want to learn about radio for the deaf in the UK
Why not? From what I've read, the concept began in America

If you are over 75 you get it free.Wow! They probably introduced this in the 1950's when few lived past 60. Now they want that the over 75 ers pay also-because they live too long now.
Wrong as usual.

"Free licence for over 75s were introduced in 2001 by the then Labour government. However, as part of the 2015 licence fee and charter negotiation, the BBC agreed to take responsibility for any future scheme and its funding from 2020."

Re: UK-Which century do they live in?

The U.K's obviously not the only country living in the last century.

Women were throwing themselves under horses in 1913 to protest for womens' rights in the U.K. That was 106 years ago.

When were women last demonstrating for womens' rights in Switzerland?

I'll give you a clue - last week!

Actually the women in the UK were striking on 8 March apparently. It’s still comparatively shitty pay in the UK if you are female. Same as here. Although I do get more of a wodge working in CH than doing the same thing in the UK.

The gap for similar jobs is around 2%. The issue is that women tend to be doing the lower paid jobs or more likely to be part time, which leads to an overall gap rather higher. (Sorry, forgot the actual figure).

This isn't redundant. It's illegal to be drunk anywhere in public. You can be drunk in a private members club or at home. The Licensing Act of 2003 makes it illegal for publicans to sell alcohol to someone who’s drunk, so it's still very much a law. So long as you're not disorderly, you probably won't be considered drunk.

Repealed by the Betting and Gaming Act 1960.

There's no evidence this was ever the case. It is definitely not legal now.

However:
It is illegal for an MP to enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour. (I wonder if stab vests count?)
It is illegal to carry a plank (or fly a kite, play annoying games, or slide on ice or snow) on a pavement.
It is illegal to fire cannon within 300 yards of a dwelling house.
It is illegal to beat or shake any carpet or rug in any street. However, beating or shaking a doormat is allowed before 8am.

More here, in the a UK Law Commission report.

Depends on the sector.

Seems if you’re a woman, your best bet is a position within the Labour Party, with only a 3% pay gap...

"Last week*-it's code for 14 June 1991. They slept for 28 years. Whats crazy about it is that nothing has changed since 1991!

No they don't - many of them voted to hark back to Queen Victoria's Empire.

The Two Ronnies - The Regiment sketch

In fact JRM is a living example of how you can revive Victorian outlooks and attitudes
from cryogenic sleep ready for the 21st century.
