A victory for democracy

Congratulations to Ursula von der Leyen!
Great that such a capable, loved and popular politician manages to become president of the European Commission.

My sarcasm detector is a bit sketchy these days, but I think he is.

I take it that there were no other suitable candidates than Germans
I’m sure that she, along with Merkel, will both ensure good job is getting done in EU.

Ursula von der Leyen: Merkel ally chosen for EU top job https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48841980

Von der Leyen elected EU Commission head after MEPs vote https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-49010801

Re: A victory for democracy

The greenies and libs are going apeshit as quite a few of her votes came from the rightwing populists.
And then there is the ongoing Gorch Fock affair,

Re: A victory for democracy

Will this raise her chances of not getting prosecuted for the corruption she is currently being researched for?

In that case: Well done Ursula.

Gaining a majority due to countries like Hungary, Italy and Poland hoping she stays as weak as always and will simply not have the guts to act to tough on them if they don't abide to the rules when it comes to refugees/immigration....

Re: A victory for democracy

The only good outcome from this farce of a EC President selection is that Martin Selmayr has been forced out. That, for Brits, is a very very good thing. We'll see who winds up in the European Commission this time round. The promise of a "Green New Deal" makes me very leery of this President, but then she may just have been trying to buy votes from the Greens.

Re: A victory for democracy

I guess we can put the selection of Ursula von der Leyen together with her integrationist tax, climate, social and green policies down as example number 103 of Remainers didn’t know what they were voting for.

Your right - you would have thought they could have found a Dutchman with a double barrelled name like Van der Valk,
in fact someone like Commissaris Simon Van der Valk would be on a par with an EU Commissioner already.

True but in today's upside down world of 21st century politics, the host of the American version of The Apprentice
has become President of the USA and a comedian starring as the President of Ukraine, actually becomes
The President of Ukraine.
