Tourists fined for making coffee at Venice bridge

Is the coffee really so expensive in Italy? Or is it about the vibe to make your own coffee in popular place? Or is it about being stubborn to break the law?

Imagine how many times one could have gone out with money paid for fine.

It costs, being a nomadic vagabond hipster.

Although, going after littering would probably help the city more.

Wowza, why there, out of all places. I know I know. But tourists packed city just doesn't cut it. How about a camp site? A tree house hotel? Some empty beach somewhere? So much more fun and cheaper and you can be a hipster and ostentatiosly make your coffee there 24/7. I think their decision to actually go see Venice was worse than their decision to handmake their coffee on a river bank of a city destroyed by tourists.

If you leave the touristic busy streets Venice is as calm as Zürich on a Sunday, and by the time the single day tourists leave even centre becomes a very nice place to hang around.

I hope they don't pay the fine. What a ridiculous thing to do to fine people for such trivial "offences". Italian lawmakers should first have a look at their rip-off traders and pickpockets.

According to the article the people of Venice have had it with the masses of tourists who do not respect city's rules and thanks to the police they will be sanctioned.

Having said that, although Switzerland is steep on any kind of fines, but I never heard before of the above. I can cycle to Aarburg now and enjoy bbq on the beach side of Aare, play loud music, enjoy oneself to such extreme that even folks seem to overflow in booze and smoke grass and there’s no law-breaking. Welcome to diaspora of Oftringen

As for everything centre the masses are indeed beyond insane during daytime, it is more crowded than Disney world at the 4th of July. We rented a place so we could browse town on the evenings when it is much more calm. So yes I can fully understand that they are coming up with all of these rules. The fine however is damn high, 250,- would also be a very clear message.

IMHO, the combined fine of €950 - that’s too steep by any standard. I guess that they have to offset a huge deficit in revenue to finance their under-budgeted Carabinieri and Polizia di Stato.

Re: Tourists fined for making coffee at Venice bridge

What's missing from most articles about this is which exact rule was broken? Was it having a picnic? Lighting an open flame? Making coffee? Sitting on the steps of the bridge?

A few possibilities from these articles, but still not totally clear. Maybe they broke more than one rule, resulting in the high fine:

All possible rules are listed here: https://www.comune.venezia.it/sites/...egolamento.pdf behavior-related rules go from Art. 30 to Art. 39.
The fined tourists violated Articles 32 (assuming beverages while sitting and being an obstacle to circulation) and 33 (improper use of monuments, bridges and other circulation areas).

I guess it would be hard even for a motivated tourist to get that document and fully memorize it; on the other side, 99% of the rules just describe standard behavior of average-civilized people.

The worst part of all the story is that there are all these rules, and yes venetian citizens are really fed up with all the barbarians invading the city; but the city itself is governed by the hotel and restaurant lobby which purely aims at having more tourists whatever the cost. And it's not going to improve any soon

They must have gotten there by mistake. The Germans usually pitch up their tents in Lido.

Perfectly sums up the problems with the Eurozone. Stingy Germans with their massive trade surplus unwilling to spend on goods in other EZ countries haha.

Re: Tourists fined for making coffee at Venice bridge

Ah, Venice...have spent a few days some years ago, when we didn't have kids. I loved it. It was crowded, but what do you want. Although I have the feeling that most people are there to just check this place on their list, not exactly to see and feel the same things like me. There are different types of tourists, maybe it's good cash in general no matter what, I can understand that. Although there are places in this world I felt like wanting to protect them myself.

The thousands coming off the cruise ships spend very little on food in Venice because they get it all on the ship. All they do is mess the place up

It was really evident when we went last Easter to Greece, Thessaloniki near Asprovalta, Kavala with small villages outside in a state of destitution. That’s the inequity in the EU and sugar topping on the cake is that stingy tourism does not rectify the underlying issues.
