I agree with your sentiments but that does not mean that while the vast majority of conspiracy theories are nonsense, that there are no actual real conspiracies out there. Given humanity's ability to deceive, you'd have to be an even bigger fool to think that.
Lemi correct, though - human ability to believe nonsense together. And low tolerance for cognitive dissonance, in general. There is a social aspect of willingly buying into fact free ideas. Human race is highly irrational. More irrational than not, and collectively.

I used to like that stuff a lot when I was a kid... project blue book and things like that. Now I more or less don't believe in it any more. In this smartphone age, you would have thought that there would be a lot more convincing videos than there used to be.

Although I must say, I always found the Roswell case intriguing.

in years gone by there was always a steady stream of people saying they've seen ufo's but didn't have a camera, now just about everyone on the planet has a camera yet we don't see thousands of UFO pics??? odd considering you could just stick em up on facebook etc

maybe the government is deleting them?
Considering how short some sightings are, not everyone can get over their shock to get their smartphone out in the split second they see something, or happens to have their phones out at the time of a sighting, before they disappear. There is lots of crappy footage out there, lots of it fake as hell, some of it genuine UFO footage that cannot be explained, some from live NASA feeds that is also extremely interesting.

UFO's are the only mass unexplained phenomenon I can think of that has sightings that I believe are statistically probable and scientifically credible and that have confounded many good pilots and military minds who are trained to assess and/or recognise all of the things they see in the air.

This is one example that made national media and was never explained: https://youtu.be/OQ7l-Fi5nJY?t=258

Lots of other videos from pilots https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ufo+pilot

NYTimes recent article on the subject https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/26/u...vy-pilots.html

For the proportion of sightings (however small) that even after detailed analysis by experts in their field can genuinely not be explained by known weather phenomena or man-made technology, it could also either be highly advanced and classified terrestrial technology, or it could be 'something else'. As radar/tracking and camera technology improves I hope it leads to more clarity and openness.

Exactly. I personally know cabin crew who have seen and reported such objects. These sightings have been officially logged by the pilot, but it's kind of an unwritten thing that you don't report it a second time if you don't want to end up being groundcrew. Allegedly, one of the commonest routes for sightings is JNB-SYD.

Re: Thoughts on conspiracy theories and other far out theories?

If they are indeed aliens visiting us, they must be technologically far superior to us. Question then is: what would be the motive for them to play a hide and seek game? Or would they consider earth as a kind of trip to the zoo?

Not irrational, we simply make our own facts.

Re: Thoughts on conspiracy theories and other far out theories?

Operation Highjump - aliens or nazis
Philadelphia Experiment - time travel
Planet X/Nibiru - orbit
Nikolai Tesla - suppressed research
Sphinx - age

Maybe not conspiracies, but it’s possible there is more involved then the “official” explanation.

Re: Thoughts on conspiracy theories and other far out theories?

America is a democracy

electoral college origins https://www.historycentral.com/elect...collgewhy.html

"Hamilton and the other founders believed that the electors would be able to ensure that only a qualified person becomes President. They thought that with the Electoral College no one would be able to manipulate the citizenry. It would act as a check on an electorate that might be duped. Hamilton and the other founders did not trust the population to make the right choice. The founders also believed that the Electoral College had the advantage of being a group that met only once and thus could not be manipulated over time by foreign governments or others."

Something's not working...

I don't buy into the argument anymore of everyone having a phone, I had a UFO experience (spoiler, was a nearby village releasing floating candles, or maybe it was swamp gas) the point is I had a good camera, and a tripod, not a phone, and I got photos and film no better than anything I'd previously lamented on the internets.

Regarding conspiracy theories, Gerald Posner's book "Case Closed" on the JFK assassination is a dry read but ought to be enough to put to rest any lingering doubts, the attention to detail is impressive.

Much as I want to believe in aliens at area 51, Annie Jacobsen's book "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base" put paid to that, based on interviews with something like 70 ex-workers from the base, she explains in a matter of fact way what happened at Roswell (no spoilers but it's *waaay* weirder and more disturbing than aliens) Moon landing deniers are just nutters, it's the single event in human history for which there is the most evidence.

I think Rendlesham Forest is probably the most compelling for me.

Oh my, you really believe this twaddle (spoiler was in a review)? https://www.amazon.com/product-revie...owViewpoints=1

Quote:
If you do any searching for Annie Jacobsen and this book, a lot of what you'll find details the biggest claim in this book. That would be what "really" happened at Roswell in 1947. Consider this a *spoiler alert*: what crashed at Roswell was a type of drone aircraft built by the Soviets, apparently manned by deformed children that'd been operated on by Josef Mengele for Stalin. Stalin wanted to recreate the type of panic Orson Welles did with his War of the Worlds broadcast, the deformed children were to be the aliens in this case.

And another...

Quote:
"The author's history of the U-2 and SR-71 developments are accurate and interesting. Her account of the Roswell "aliens" is a farce. She quotes extensively from an engineer who supposedly knew the real story who in reality was having fun with her gullibility."

and this is the problem, people form opinions based on a few lines of text they pull of the internet rather than actually reading a book. Oh well.

So following your train of thought - if I read the whole of the New Testament, Jesus really does become the son of God?
