Will that turn into #Wasn'tMe... Trudeau irks me but not for this brainfart he did.

If your costume is Russian and you party in Crimea, should we be outraged about it here? There are present conflicts nobody cares about, unfortunately. Yet people travel lobg into history to be able to posture. Trudeau aka Captain PC was always one of them. I think "hypocrisy" or "bad taste" is a weak word for this.

Yes. But not for him having ideas long time ago. And I think we are not asked to forgive him, either. We would like to think we are.

There is a room. Thankgod.

Interesting.

There is a whole dermo-cosmetic industry for skin bleaching. Is it racist?
And all the Asiatics love to colour their face white. Guess it does give them some sense of superiority.

"All the Asiatics"?

"Is skin bleaching racist?"

Did I get transported back to 1976 in the night?

I don't think so.

But maybe the make up industry should reconsider their unpc terminology. My make up has "ivory" or "porcelain" written on it.

I wish. They don't, they say "what are you grinning about" or "I couldn't resist, it's your smile".

I actually think Trudeau is leading his country because of his demeanor, appearance and all the other visual stuff, tbh. Macron isn't far from this. French esthetics. Complete opposites of DT.

If you wear that costume and paint your face you're racist, if you just wear a costume it's cultural appropriation. I know that because I have learned it here on EF. I also learned about white privilege, had no idea what's that a few years ago. I'm very grateful! I'm very grateful to have been taught that the current PM of the greatest and least racist country in the world, oh no, that's America, is a racist.

Congrats for the thread, omtatsat, you have stirred the pot in your usual, unique way.

You mean cultural appropriation (I think it is more misappropriation now) vs cultural appretiation.

And then there are oblivious people who want to have fun in silly costumes or those who dislike their own skin color and whiten it.

I guess it would be less complicated if the entire world stopped assuming wrong intent, stop assigning priviledges and just worked a little on tolerance in general. I guess it's optimistic, boring and old school.

I don't think there's any evidence that Mr Trudeau IS a racist, but he has certainly done some racist things:

- at a time, age and station when he certainly should have known better; and

- subsequently failed to own up to it until pressed; and

- offered a very unconvincing apology which attempted to share blame with a lot of other people who have never done anything of the sort...

... all after spending the last several years wagging his finger at people and making a big deal about how much of an "ally" he is.

You made me laugh. Make up is no longer a paint. It's Geishas who still stick to paints. And people pay 200-300$/2hrs to be with them at the parties. So. I don't think they would object if people culturally missappropriated their customs, they are still cashing up on it big times. I also heard there is only one man-geisha. Traditions, right? Not discrimination.

I don't know what I mean, I'm sleep and coffee deprived!!!

Could you please assign me some privileges because I think I have the right skin tone*? That's what mods do, no?

On a more serious note, I don't like how politics is done. I want to vote for someone for their political platform, I'm tired to look into other people's dirty laundry.

*btw, most people I know appreciate a good tan, they think it's way sexier than their natural colour. So it goes both ways.

If someone was standing on an anti-corruption ticket, wouldn't you be interested in hearing about their attempted suppression of an investigation into a fuel pipeline company?

... for example

So does mine. How are they "un pc" terms? Mine also has "fair" and "opal". Your point?

So as long as he's pretty it's acceptable? Aesthetics beat moral fortitude? Every day is indeed a school day.

Ah so it's fine to correct people and stuff when you do it. Got ya.

If you cannot see that a grown man, educated and with every opportunity gifted to him has no excuse not to know how bloody stupid and racist he was being... then obviously it must not be so, eh?

It's funny. Our boy overheard us talking about Mr Trudeau at the breakfast table and asked what was inappropriate, so my wife explained it to him. He understood totally.

If a five year old boy gets it, I find it impossible to believe that a grown man with a cosmopolitan background and a good education didn't get it - and, of course, if he didn't get that then, what is he not getting now? [Cough... indigenous rights... mansplaining... cough]

Re: Justin Trudeau-his favorite entertainment?

The only possible mitigation would be whatever cultural norms were present in Canada at the time.

As mentioned before, the days of Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning were long gone in the UK by 2001, but I've no idea what society was like in America's Hat... Any Canadian want to chime in? Ideally ones who lived there, not people who have lived in Switzerland the last 20 years.

I think the cosmetics industry is actually pretty creative, never asked myself if those adjectives are politically correct or not. I like how some companies use the words to "accurately" describe skin tones. When I was a teen my class mates were enamoured with some sort of tan cream, which worked on some and some got an orange look. Oh, or the awful, awful look after the so popular tanning beds. Yack.
Never been into this stuff, I just love the sun and the warmth, and detest heavy make-up. (I'm not Amish, I swear)
