How is blackfacing comparable to dressing up as a fantasy figure that's not even black?

We all did stupid things in our youth and his "entertainment" wasn't an issue as it is today.

He's apologized and expressed regret.

Now, let's move on.

Just as we did with Brett Kavanagh.

That's your opinion. I'm convinced he was an A**hole in his youth and he's still one today.

This is equally dumb as lowering the max speed today from 120 down to 100 and than handing out a fine to somebody who drove 110 decades ago.

The claims against him were violent sexual assault and attempted rape. Do you claim that rape was acceptable behaviour at Yale in 1983?

There were 2400 law professors petitioning against him... not the same thing in my book.

I was only referring to his blacking up.* No it's not my opinion - it's my bleak sense of humour, which isn't to everyone's taste.

Yep.

I knew a black American in Basel at one time, who's about 10 years older then Brett. He remembers losing friends through lynching. That really brought it home how recent these things are.

* In his yearbook, next to a guy in KKK outfit.

I don't totally get all this....

I understand if you just dress up as a "black person" or do it in a way you make fun of them it would be racist. But I don't get how going to fancy dress, dressed as a famous black person or character is racist. In this case making your skin darker is just part of the costume as much as the clothing

For example, when I was about 19, me and my friends went to a party as the spice girls. The girl who went as Scary Spice darkened her skin, there was absolutely nothing racist about it, it was part of the costume. At the same time I went as Ginger Spice, I dyed my hair ginger.... does that therefore make me Gingerist???

I'm mostly of the same opinion but I think over time it has just been overtaken by the whole symbolism of it so anyone who wears make up to darken their skin, even if it's just to make a fancy dress outfit more convincing, is tarred with the same brush (pun not intended).

Probably the lines between being racially abusive and just doing it as part of a costume got blurred somewhere along the lines, enough people got upset about it and, boom, it is now taboo across the board.

It's all about context: "blackface" is more than just make-up, it's a concept with a very uncomfortable history. Given the potential for offence, because of that history, it would be wise for any white person to give it a miss.

It's worth reading up on. Some interesting stuff!

If your costume is Hellboy would you paint your face and other exposed skin red?

If your costume is Shrek or Fiona the Ogrs would you paint your face and other exposed skin green?

If your costume is the Incredible Hulk would you paint your face and other exposed skin green?

If your costume is Disney's Aladin Genie would you paint your face and other exposed skin blue?

If your costume is Mystique (X-Men) would you paint your face and other exposed skin blue?

If your costume is Donald J. Trump would you paint your face but not other exposed skin orange?

If your costume is the late Robert M. Mugabe would you paint your face and other exposed skin brown?

And finally, if your costume is a Minstrel would you paint your face and other exposed skin black or do you think the costume it self even w/o face paint is bad taste?

I can remember a story about John Barnes (played for Liverpool and England, only the second black player to play for Liverpool) turning up to a team fancy dress party in the 80s dressed in KKK attire.

The thing is though that Trudeau had now three independent cases where he painted his face black and it appears his theme in the latest case was more "generic funny black guy and its funny cause I am black"..

Funny how a dickhead from Cannock, growing up in the seventies and eighties, not known for his sensitive outlook on life, managed to avoid dressing up in blackface even once in nearly half a century, but a self-proclaimed progressive type from a famous political family did it not once but three times!

It was a long time ago, for sure, but still...

Maybe he enjoys "black dressing", what would the outrage be if he was a former cross dresser?

On the other hand he is Captain Super PC https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nd-not-mankind

Once your worldly reputation is in tatters, the opinion of others hardly matters. But if not, you have to be more careful than a bull in a china shop.

Didn't they already invent a gender-neutral label for "peoplekind" which would have avoided all the vein-popping? "Humanity".
