There they stand the very real risk of being labelled as sex pests or being accused of sexual harrasment.
Yes. It’s surely political correctness gone mad.

Curiously some of us somehow manage to make it without ever facing accusations.

I blame pesky parents, teaching their sons the values of showing respect towards women.

Its not just enough for the kids to wave a placard. Change starts with the person. Are they going to give up buying their new handy every year,or buying a shopping wagon full of H&M cheap shit. Are they going to buy a car when they get to 18. Are they going to stop trashing the environment with all sorts of garbage.
Holy crap! You said something... right!

It‘s funny how some men of a certain age get their GAP chinos in a twist about a small girl in pigtails. Is it something in the vaping fluid?

Greta and children in general are being used to promote a political agenda by people who don’t care about long-term welfare
If the "political agenda" is saving our planet, while also making the next generation conscious of how fragile said planet is, fine by me!

All fine and I agree, but I do not see those kids changing behaviour just yet. Shouting and taking a day off from school is not going to help much if you do not do anything else.

Are we, adults, always consistent with our views? Surely filling our shopping bags despite our love for nature and genuine concern for the environment has happened to all and each of us, I think.

Some kids take things even a step further. My OH's nephew was telling us he's seriously thinking of a method to safely decompose all that plastic we have accumulated in the nature and don't know what to do with it. (oh, if he only knew...) The point is they do care and not only at a superficial, day-off from school kind of thing. Why assume.

Re: Stop the exploitation of Greta and children

Good for your nephew.

No, I am not saying that kids need to be consistent when adults often are not.

I do believe in starting to improve things by yourself: "Verbeter de wereld en begin bij jezelf"

When I see what amount of trash daily is thrown away by the kids from the Kantonalschule, who all seem to have money to buy their lunch at the local Migros or Döner shop I doubt that a lot of them think about that.

Exactly. Its not just the kids. Its the whole lifestyle culture and the way our system has evolved. I myself remember as a kid always going to school with my brown bag lunch or going home for lunch. There were no fast food stores with goat food in a plastic container. Even big macs came in cardboard boxes and Danone jogurts were in waxed cardboard containers. And bottle water and soda came in glass jars. And now it dam hard to find anything these days without plastic. Even the fish in the sea are full of it. And the way it looks, it ain't about to stop. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/12/b...nia-plant.html
So if the kids in the world are protesting, even if its jumping on the band wagen trendy, so be it. Better then going off to riot at soccer games and trashing the train on the way home.

I agree with this. One of the TV stations (BBC?) interviewed some of the teens that were marching and asked what they wanted to do. The kids said things like "stop climate change" and "reduce carbon emissions". When pressed further as to what they themselves do, or what steps someone could take now to help, the kids didn't seem to have any ideas. They were only repeating what they'd been told or what was on their signs. It was more like a fun day off school participating in a thing.

I also believe that Greta is being exploited. She's well-spoken and has her own ideas but she's still a quite young and easily manipulated. The events that invite her to speak often mention the fact she's on the autism spectrum yet look how she's doing these amazing things. To me, that's exploiting her different abilities as well as her youth to try and get across their message.

Re: Stop the exploitation of Greta and children

I don't think Greta is being exploited, I would not underestimate teens at all. They know what they are doing and why. How media is parasitical on her activity, and others - yes. But with her consent. She shows a good grasp of marketing. Or her dad?

The fact the students were not sure on how to solve the situation - they probably did not spend enough time in school on that. It's more fun to protest.

I do like this optimistic energy. They'll learn and probably start looking for solutions.

I'm baffled by this thread. Clearly most people know what it's about, and who Greta is, but having read through the whole thread, I still have no idea.

And no, I'm not interested enough to google it

Living in a cave and keeping distant from society is likely very environmental friendly I'd say. you do your share

Yes. Recently heard from a family beginning to plan their next vacation. A parent brought home a catalogue for them all to browse through and discuss. When someone liked the photos and picked out a particular overseas beach destination, the 12-year-old son said: "No way! We can't get there by train."

Maybe the kid doesn't like being groped and barked at by security staff, herded into a claustrophobic metal tube, and risking hypoxia, disintegration or chatty neighbours at an altitude even eagles daren't fly? Maybe he enjoys watching the variations in passing scenery as he gets closer to his destination, taking a pleasant amble to the buffet car, stretching out his legs and having a reasonably comfortable nap? Maybe I'm biased?

Those may all be true, too. This particular child's objection was firmly that flying is not good for the enrivonment, and unnecessary since it was also possible to enjoy a nice holiday in some other place that could be reached without flying.
